idrankwhat 0 #51 January 17, 2007 QuoteQuoteQuote Then why are you suggesting that as he becomes seasoned, he will become corrupted? Maybe "corrupted" is not the right word. "Compromised" fits better. And the problem stems from the fact that if he, or anyone else is going to make a serious run at the WH then they're going to have to raise at least a couple hundred million dollars. Take the money out of our politics and we might actually have "seasoned statesmen" in office one day. Until that happens we're stuck with the best (and worst) politicians money can buy. Are you saying that ALL Politicians become corrupt eventually? If so, I'd have to disagree. I think people with character flaws and low morality are the ones who become corrupt. Ive always liked what JC Watts once said: "Character is doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching". I'm a scientist. I never say "all"....or never That being said, I'll say what I said. I think "corrupted" is the wrong word (most of the time). I think politicians are forced to compromise themselves due to the fact that they can't get elected in this system without accepting bribe money. And forget what I said about "never" and "all". All campaign money is bribery.
DaVinci 0 #52 January 17, 2007 QuoteBarack is a Senator in my state. It is well known that he is for a complete ban of Semi-Automatic firearms. I would like to be able to like the guy but ... Based on that he takes a hit in my book.
rehmwa 2 #53 January 17, 2007 I don't believe that power corrupts. I do believe that power attracts the corruptable, though. Congressional service should be like jury duty - enforced, temporary and avoided like the plague. Only different in that it should draw from the most successful in the country from all aspects. ... Even if he is from Illinois. I agree. I'm not suggesting he doesn't. I think someone can become a better Executive through "experience" in the trenches, so to speak. When did the last 2+ term senator get elected President? How many tried and failed? How much legislative experience did Abraham Lincoln have?... skippyjumps 0 #58 February 14, 2008 QuoteI was figuring since McCain is considered a Moderate in his party and not completely well liked by the same, it would play well with the public. And that would play even better for Joe, hell he left his party and won! If you remember he did not leave his party the DNC backed another guy. At that time Lieberman ran as an independent. I have to say that although I don't agree with Lieberman on alot of issues, I do think he does what he feels is best for his constituants!"whatcha doin with that lawn mower blade?" crwtom 0 #60 February 14, 2008 Quote Oddly, I view the lack of political experience as a plus rather than a minus. Of the Democratic candidates names I've heard bantied about thus far, none has seemed more electable (with my limited set of information). it seems the notions of "electable/popular" and "competent/experienced" are diverging more and more in US politics. If I had to order dem candidates according to the former it'd be Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Richardson and if by the latter it'd be Richardson, Clinton, Edwards, Obama ... almost the opposite Cheers, T ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true
