wmw999 2,589 #5 January 15, 2007 Ever heard the soccer game analogy? We're in a soccer game. The score is 75-2, because the field is tilted. All of a sudden, the field is untilted. The score is still 75-2. Some of the old skills don't work as well any more, and the weaker folks (who just couldn't kick uphill -- it's harder than kicking downhill) have given up. But hey -- the field is level now, so we're all the same. I don't think that reparations are the way to go. But the score is definitely still 75-2, and the field is the way that white guys designed it. Everyone else had better suck it up and deal with that. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. Only if it is English soccer where everyone riots if they lose. I think that in the 60s that we were reaching a "critical mass" type situation. If nothing was done, eventually there would have been major racial conflict. Originally, the Black Panthers were essentially a peaceful political party. They helped the Diggers distribute food in some of the free food programs in San Fran. Then, people came back from VN, very angry and with weapons skills. To push the agenda, Freedom Summer was when 500, primarily black and Jewish students came to the South. Southern culture was primarily Christian and this was looking like the Apocalypse (Jews destroying Christianity). Things were accelerated beyond the comfort level. The strength of MLK was his ability to assimilate supporters and use them politically. While he did accomplish some financial integration, I don't really see any cultural integration. I blame that on the media imagery and the political groups that have co-opted his support base (Al Sharpton, Marion Barry, et al) for their own uses. MLK fought for the chance to participate in the cultural advantages of education and legal justice. Instead, in 20 years, I haven't seen more than a handful of leaders emerge. To me, that is a failure of the black leadership as well.
