Voting / Intelligence

Should people be required to pass a basic intelligence test (consisting of history/logic/etc... questions) before they can vote?

Great idea! Exclude anyone with an IQ <150 and no doctorate.

Ah! But the exclusion operator resolves before the AND operator!

I propose that a candidate be able to pass an intelligence exam before being allowed to run for office. Bush, most likely, would have had trouble figuring out which end of the pencil to use.

Wow... and he had a HIGHER GPA than Kerry did...where's that leave HIM?

Nope. Just give people a blank ballot and let em vote for whoever they want. That way if they don't even know who's running, they can't vote for a party, and they can't just "fill in the boxes."

Great in theroy, but think of the coruption our Repub brothers would employ when they didn;t have to count knocked out chads but read names. Otherwise a great idea.

Yes, yes, and yes.

See, here's the thing . . . I'm not entirely sure you do.

The major ramification is that we have the electoral college.

Now, can you tell me what the original point of that was?

Ask me, ask me.

Consider the question asked, my good Professor!

(Other people please take note: it took a person not born in the U.S. to figure it out!)

Why make this an insult?

A) How is it an insult?

B) It has more to do with the fact that Kallend is intel rather than not born here.

Don't be so touchy...:)

(It's certainly NOT an insult at Kallend)

Why?!? Are you kidding me?!?

This is a High-School Civics 101 question and most of the people on this thread apparently didn't do well in it; are willing to debate topics ranging from the entire gammut of the Consitution night and day, yet seem to not know the answers to even the most basic questions!

To ME, as a person that takes the time and effort to vote, it's insulting that other people don't know the process.

A guy at work was naturalizing from Switzerland, he knew as much as I did at that time about the US and the Const, whereas virtually all of the coworkers were nowhere close to his knowledge. Sad.... pathetic. I think born citizens feel that they have a bye on this knowledge, rather than having a greater burden to know it.

Federalist #68 (Publius, aka Alexander Hamilton)
It was desirable that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the person to whom so important a trust was to be confided. This end will be answered by committing the right of making it, not to any preestablished body, but to men chosen by the people for the special purpose, and at the particular conjuncture.

It was equally desirable, that the immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice. A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations.

It was also peculiarly desirable to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This evil was not least to be dreaded in the election of a magistrate, who was to have so important an agency in the administration of the government as the President of the United States. But the precautions which have been so happily concerted in the system under consideration, promise an effectual security against this mischief. The choice of SEVERAL, to form an intermediate body of electors, will be much less apt to convulse the community with any extraordinary or violent movements, than the choice of ONE who was himself to be the final object of the public wishes.

Or, to paraphrase, "we the elite don't trust the masses to make the right decision".

Or maybe they saw the pitfalls of a "classic" democracy and wanted to avoid them...

Of course, it doesn't hardly matter anymore... the masses still get their 'bread and circuses' from Big Mama FedGov...[:/]

Can we bring up Hizonner, too? I'm sure Daley's hijinks (pere or fils, take your pick) are equally valid.

According to ordinance, within the Chicago city limits a death certificate is an acceptable substitute for a voter registration card.

And why not - a dead guy was elected Senator in Missouri a few years ago, and right now we have a brain-dead president.:D

it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Sorry if my post was confusing. I know an insult was NOT aimed at kallend. I to agree that not knowing the process is bad. I took you remark as an insult to others who had not yet answered you and that a US born was not the first.
If I miss read you point forgive me.

Personally I would like the same standard applied to the "natives" to get their citizenship in this fine country. Perhaps if more had to study and learn the lessons of the past, far fewer mistakes would be happening in our present.

Electing our government based on a popularity contest of being..."just one of the good old boys" aint working so well.

Never assume anything about operator priority. The Viking spacecraft was lost due to unwarranted assumptions about FORTRAN syntax.

Neither is "he's an intellectual". It's come down to being a raw popularity contest the last few decades, more's the pity.

Most of the world at that time could not figure out what kind of brromstick the Americans have up their Collective Arses about the things he was accused of.... they respected our president even if he did get a fucking blow job..... as opposed to the psuedo-righteous every man.. who has lost us respect in MOST of the world.

Perhaps the rest of the world is not so hung up on sex as the right wing in this psuedo-puritanical America that seeks to foist this stupidity on the rest of the planet..... most of the planet LIKES blow jobs.. and sex.

Blah Blah Blah.... you still cant get over that what he said was a very carfully worded lawyerly semantics game based on the same cdap that a hell of a lot of men in the south still believe.. that a blowjob... is NOT having sexual relations with that woman.

ONLY sexual intercourse counts..... and as many here claim.. its just a release... so you dont mess up the sheets:S
