Darius11 12 #80 January 12, 2007 I think Jen made a valid point. I mean what’s the reason of this thread. To say oh look the people in CO are better then the people in NO. Who did we see on TV a lot of African Americans. I think Jen pointed out what was trying to be said in between the lines. Which is: hey I think African Americans are stupid cause look the white people seem to have done fine and not needed help. Don’t be pissed at her for making it non-PC. I mean what’s the point of this thread?I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

Some people see beyond the color of skin and attribute problems to the values a person holds instead of their skin color (just because a person is a certain skin color does not mean they have certain values)."That looks dangerous." Which is: hey I think African Americans are stupid cause look the white people seem to have done fine and not needed help. Again, not even fucking close. YOU and SHE brought up race. And trying to claim that a person is a bigot IS an attack. What is New Orleans often called? "The Big Easy". That whole area has a reputation of living fast and loose. (Notice nothing about blacks mentioned???) Other places have different community vibes. New York people are often considered harsh, Texas rednecks with big hearts....Blah, Blah. And last I checked black people live in NY, TX and New Orleans...Hey, so do white people! My statement was that the way the people of New Orleans are so easy going that they reacted in a way that was to let others take care of them. Other places are not like that. To ignore that is being stupid or obtuse to be difficult.

They see a problem in one community and not in another but they are not attributing the problem to race but instead to other issues. (The people in both situations did not act the way they did because of the color of their skin but because of their values which are independent of skin color.) so i ask again what’s the point of this thread? To say the people in NO have bad values that’s why so many died? Do you really think if it was a lot of white people you saw on TV there would be people trying to criticize the people in NO?I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

NCclimber 0 #85 January 12, 2007 QuoteDo you really think if it was a lot of white people you saw on TV there would be people trying to criticize the people in NO? I think a lot of the criticism for NO came from the aftermath. The looting, the stories from the Superdome, the stories about hospitals being attacked. Granted there were some gross exaggerations being reported in the weeks after Katrina, but the confirmed stories tell a pretty horrific tale. Coincidentally, almost all of the reported perpetrators of these crimes were black. While this does say who was doing what in the aftermath of Katrina, it really doesn't say anything about anyone else, regardless of what people on both sides of the story want you to believe. billvon 3,132 #86 January 12, 2007 >I think a lot of the criticism for NO came from the aftermath. I agree there. There was some pretty heinous stuff going on during that time. I recall one group of vigilantes who were guarding a bridge and not letting people into their town because they didn't want any more filthy refugees. >Coincidentally, almost all of the reported perpetrators of these crimes were black. I agree that they were reported as such, but I also think we saw a lot of media bias. In one famous set of pictures from New Orleans, helicopters took pictures of a black man carrying a bag of something on his head, and a white couple carring several bags through waist-deep water. (among a dozen others.) Those two pictures were entitled something like: A couple stocks up on supplies Looter wades through flooded streets Based on just seeing those three people from a helicopter, someone made the call that the black guy was a looter and the white people were just "stocking up." I don't think that's a conscious bias, but even today people see what they expect to see.
