Who here actually thinks that Congress believed that the Iraq war was based upon a theory of weapons of mass destruction?

Look - it was a nice story. It was a nice way for Congress to show "plausible deniability" and foist the responsibility on Bush. Bush, of course, didn't mind it.

As with most things, there is a "public story" and a "real story." Does anyone here think that Congress really bought the story about "weapons of mass destruction?" If so, was this belief reasonable? To me it is the equivalent of buying a Rolex on the street for 20 bucks. Either it's fake, or it's stolen.

When the Iraq invasion was in it's final pre-invasion stages, I saw a Congressman give a chat at a meeting of the Lincoln Club. He said that the reason we are goign there is to stabilize the region under a "broken windows" theory. He said that dictators like Saddam needed to be stripped of their power to spread democracy. That the Iraqi people need to be secure and free. And that, yes, the fact that the oil supply is a factor that cannot be ignored. WMD's are a probability, and like "slavery" with the Civil War, it is a side issue that everyone can unite around.

I asked him (which drew some looks there like I'd just pointed out that the emperor has no clothes) why not NoKo? Their leader is crazier. NoKo's people are hungrier. NoKo is testing missiles over Japan. We've had a better supply of oil since Saddam took power than before he took power. Assuming the reasons are true, NoKo should be first on the list, not to mention the confirmed and admitted WMD development operation.

He replied that we couldn't win a war with NoKo without a horrible toll - that million man army would take over SoKo in three days unless we fried everything and everyone in between to stop it. He also said that NoKo is a blemish on an otherwise stable area. Finally, he admitted that NoKo has nothing worth protecting.

This was a Congressman.

This is the reason we were told. Before the war This was what was felt. I never paid much attention to the news then. What do they know? And later, all of a sudden, I hear "bush Lied" and some stuff about the WMD's. Knowing the press, I didn't pay much attention till it became some sort of conspiracy. I've wondered if the Press was being selective on what they were reporting on the reasons for War; and when the small insignificant not-to-serious reason didn't transpire, they used it as News when in reality, wasn't the real focus.

But then; I'm in the Navy and not a civillian that has to rely on the news for information.

I dont think Congressmen. or any politician as a matter of fact, are any different or smarter then the rest of the population of their country. Look at the number of people who believed the WMD lie.

I think they went along for convenience. No one but a moron would have actually believed the stuff the White House was telling us. And Powell's presentation to the UN was just embarrassing.

Personally I think if they did believe it they weren't doing their jobs. Which is a joke anyway. They were more interested in figuring out a way to get another pay increase and a one day work week at the sheeples expense. Get rid of the whole lot and start over. Do I have a solution? Nope. Status quo will carry on

If you think back to the runup to the war.. there was a pervasive... IF YOU ARE NOT WITH US YOU ARE AGAINST US....Guess they decided to get on board for the perception of being with him... at least to the point of authorizing the use of our military .... IF... needed... I think its been shown that it was a war of convienience for the enrichment of the Neo-Con PNAC Administration.. and to support their nation building initiative that they had already told us about....
