Should women serve in combat?

Recommended Posts

Actually I am against it. At least in front line units like the Infantry. Women simply aren't built for it. Can they shoot? Yes no doubt there are some fantastic female shooters, can they kill? Without a doubt. Would they degrade the fighting effectivness of infantry unit? Without a doubt. If it came to hand to hand fighting they wouldn't stand a chance either.

No separate qualifications for men / women - they either pass the test or they don't. If they don't, then they aren't put in a line unit.

What Mike said.
If you can do it then you can do it. Same standards for all.

Well, women have to do two years of military service in Israel, although they do get to choose if they want to be actively involved in combat or not -as far as I know-, so the question is, are we prepared to have women serving next to our male soldiers? The only issue I see here is one chick hooking up with a solider, it will happen and it will lead to wrongdoing from either part. A decision during combat could be taken on the basis of mere feelings rather than logic. I am pretty sure this happens to an extend in all armies, there is love and hate in between soldiers, but this is different.

If a chick really wants to go in the desert for her country, and has proven herself in the same way her male brothers in arms did, let her.

I've known a Australian female Soldier who went out on a patrol into the jungle with the rest of the team who were men. She didn't shit for four days as she was to embarrased and held her pee in as long as possible so she wouldn't have to go in front of them much. I wouldn't want the person covering me to be concentrating on their bladder or trying not to follow through when they farted. Women in front line units are a stupid idea.

And beyond the standards, what would happen to a front line infantry unit of men that had a few chicks in it once the lead started flying including all the drama that happens in mixed company leading up to that point?

One of my father’s details in that Viet place was to get body parts out of a pile and sorta put together the pieces that looked like they went together till there was enough in each body bag to make up a human.
Ever seen the opening sequence of combat in Private Ryan?
I know it is just a movie, but could you imagine if 2 or 3 out of every 10 soldiers were women?

Since I was taught to treat and regard women like I do my mother I guess that is why I feel the way I do - I certainly would not want my mom in combat and sorting out pieces of dead soldiers, but I am proud that my father served his country and did the duties he was asked to perform without complaining. Also, I am proud that my mother served her country and did the duties she was asked to perform. Different duties, same goal, a stronger future for our country.

Since I have not been in an infantry unit, not to mention one in combat I am not really qualified to give an opinion, hell I was in the Corps of Engineers and we fraternized quite a lot (guys and gals).
The opinions of those who have that experience I have read about are that it is a recipe for disaster. And I read this stuff on the internet so it must be true.

Anybody out there know first hand or is it all gonna be just speculation by a bunch of skydivers who don’t really know the answer but rather just finding a way to pass the time till they once again get a green light?

Well I guess that would make the job easier.

But...but...but...I thought there weren't supposed to be any differences between a man and a woman? :S:S:S

Oh but there are!

For instance, I can't balance a checkbook, hold down a real job or get a stain out but my wife seems to be able to do all of those things!

I was speaking solely to the physical qualifications. The mental/emotional aspect would definitely bear looking at, however.

Women, by and large, are more "emotionally connected" than men are. I think that combat stress/fatigue would be more pronounced in women, as a whole. Obviously, I don't have any hard info - this is all solely my opinion, as to the effects of combat.

Do women in the USMC have the same standards to achive as the men? ie: Fitness and so on, same times to do things in same heights to climb?

Don't know but when I was in boot camp for the Army in 1987 there were different standards and I thought it was all to easy.

Now I understand it is even easier...
