PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) — A passenger claiming to have an explosive device tried to hijack a Russian airliner over Europe on Thursday, but was subdued by other people on board, authorities said.

The Russian man was detained after the Aeroflot Airbus A320 made an emergency landing at Prague's international airport, police said. Authorities said they did not suspect terrorism.

The plane was en route from Moscow to Geneva when the man apparently tried to break into the cockpit, demanding the pilots fly to Africa, police spokesman Pavel Hantak said. The man claimed he had an explosive device, Aeroflot deputy director Lev Koshlyakov told Russia's Rossiya television.

The suspect was then "pacified on board the plane," allowing the pilots to make an emergency landing, Hantak said. Two Czech jet fighters were dispatched, but no intervention was necessary, said Czech Defense Ministry spokesman Andrej Cirtek.

Police were searching the plane for explosives, Hantak said. Authorities did not suspect a terror plot, said Jan Subert, spokesman for the Czech counterintelligence service.

"From what we know, the incident had nothing to do with terrorism," he said.

The suspect was traveling with eight family members, including three children, Hantak said. He said the family members were not involved in the incident.

We're on the 4th post and the lefties have yet to step in screaming about how it was wrong of him to be "pacified" and we are infringing on his rights by detaining him, hmmm strange, must be the blizzard are something:P

What a STUPID comment.

It goes to show what some have been saying ever since the TSA set up its absurd cosmetic rules; that the passengers, not the security services, will prevent future hijackings.

Example.

The cosmetic rules are silly, but hijackings are not the only concern. The passengers can't prevent someone from detonating a bomb if there isn't any advance warning by the bomber, or if it is in the baggage compartment, etc. That is where the security services are needed.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

So how about using their limited time and effort looking for bombs instead of confiscating our fingernail files, nail clippers, and screwdrivers (assuming they're not exploding fingernail files, that is)?

It's not lefties, liberals is more correct of a term!:)

Anyway, this was on the news here, apparently the guy was drunk. I am not too sure why they need to clarify this, how is it possible for a Russian going on vacation not to be drunk?:P

Exactly! The whole binary liquids thing is a new problem but confiscating nail files and pocket knives is a sign of insipid leadership.

The passengers will not be able to prevent it. No terrorist will ever again try to highjack a plane with knives. The terrorist will educate themselves as pilots. When the passengers realize what's happening they can't intervene because the cockpit door is armored and locked. :S

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
