kelpdiver 2 #51 June 25, 2007 QuoteI'M AGREEING WITH YOU - it is the PUREST COINCIDENCE that SC has a bunch of threads where the right protests injustices to white people like Libby and the Duke players, while maintaining a strong defense of injustices to Padilla or the Gitmo detainees. Pure coincidence. There are obvious reasons beyond race for this. Outside of men's basketball, Duke doesn't reign terror on the rest of the country. They (and Libby) are citizens, .... You seem happy to jump to assertions of racism. but 30 years ago, these same people would be saying the same things about (white) Soviets.

They (and Libby) are citizens, .... You think the rape of that stripper wouldn't have been an utterly terrifying experience that would haunt her for the rest of her days? Why, when there is even the slightest hint that those boys may have carried out, or were thinking of carrying out, such a vile deed, surely it is for the good of the country that they be locked up? And why is it different if they are citizens? And even if it is different if they are citizens, Padilla himself was a citizen...Do you want to have an ideagasm? kelpdiver 2 #53 June 26, 2007 I'm addressing Gitmo. The conservatives will argue that because we're in a state of war, the enemy can be treated that way. It doesn't really explain away how they're not POW and can be hidden away forever, but there's a semblance of an argument. So the difference is not that the Gimo people are brown, but that they are at war with us. And yes, US citizens have more rights than non citizens. Again, a key difference from Duke students. People can argue all day if these differences should matter, but it's false to say that race is the only factor here, and they're right to bristle at the BS allegations coming from Chicago. Terrorist debate tactics, right in line with the 'when did you stop beating your wife' approach.

And then there's the XIVth Amendment, too.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
jakee 1,611 #55 June 26, 2007 QuoteSo the difference is not that the Gimo people are brown, but that they are at war with us. Except the ones that, uh, weren't. And all the ones that were citizens of allied coalition countries, like the UK. Would it be OK with you if the UK was locking up American citizens on a prison ship off the Isle of White without trial or evidence?Do you want to have an ideagasm? Not that I approve of the our governments handling of Gitmo detainees, but you've got to wonder what those foreigners were thinking, when they chose to stay in Afghanistan, as the US military was threatening to launch a full scale attack.
