But the guy was a singer! What could the FBI and Brit intelligence possibly feel meritted such attention?

A singer who thought that the Beatles were more popular than Christ!.Of course he had to be spied on!:P
And the way he evolved from the clean-cut Liverpool days to the longhaired, drug taking hippie - you are still surprised? I think there was a lot more to him than met the eye.B|

He considered all of them perverts...guess it took one to know one....maybe he should have been a televangelist instead.

Hoover had a very strange curiosity and interest in Hollywood and it's citizens. He also had files on the Kennedy's, starting with Joe Sr. What is interesting to me is that, FBI Agents, back then were required to have either business degrees or similar. Hoover wanted to 'mold' his agents the way he wanted them.
There was a bumper-sticker, years ago that read: "Hoover Sleeps With A Night-Light!"

J. edgar Hoover, not only kept dossiers on Lennon, but also, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Hoffa and more.

I could see Jimmy Hoffa, but Sinatra and Monroe? Why?

Sinatra, for 'Possible mob ties'. Monroe, because she was connected to the Kennedys. Joe Kennedy was a 'rum runner' during prohibition. Actually, many of the people that Hoover had files on, there was nor reason for it.

Hoover was obsessed with peoples sex lives. It was getting the dirt on people so he could blackmail them politically if he wanted to.. Look at his files on Martin Luther King....many of them delat with his affairs etc.

And let's not forget the bedroom audio tapes Hoover had the FBI make of Martin Luther King engaging in extramarital sex (which were eagerly listened to by LBJ).

So, in a nutshell, he was a nut.

Ahem...

Lennon was:

-A foreign national
-With a criminal record
-With vast financial resources
-And influence over millions of minds

...That is why the FBI would keep files on him

The criminal record didn't have much to do with why they were watching him at all. It's his (political) influence they were worried about.

His criminal record and immigration status was only used to try to get him out of the country, and didn't have much of anything to do with why they kept files on him.

Anyways, the FBI should have noted that John Lennon posed no threat to the U.S. government and thus it there was no purpose to keep files on him.

The FBI kept extensive files on him, and mainly for political reasons, not because they saw him as a threat to national security.

National Security meant something completely different in the 60's and early 70's than it does today. Especially to a paranoid drunk for president that was in power at the time. Nixon hated Lennon. The nation was at the height of the idea Communist would take us over and that SUV's would never be created!:D:D:D:D

By the way, I like Nixon, but, he was still a drunk!:D

FBI had files on all the rock stars of that day!

others mean and rueful of the western dream"
