England: "Ban" Air Guns

Recommended Posts

Quote

It seems then John, you see it necessary for everyone to be armed then. Of course, preferably not the criminals, but thats never going to happen is it? Unarmed criminals? :S
Fine, every healthy, sane, law abiding citizen carries a gun. This will achieve more harm than good. Think of the simplicity for criminals to arm themselves. They'd all be armed now. Gun crime would go through the roof.

First, I'm not in favor of forcing all people to be armed. Only those that wish to arm themselves, and who legally qualify, should be armed. Freedom of choice applies here.

And this process has nothing at all to do with arming criminals. Any criminal who wants to be armed, is already armed. Just because the law-abiding can arm themselves, doesn't automatically mean that somehow the criminals are all magically going to be armed.

It's already fairly easy for criminals to get guns on the black market. And yet, gun crime, until this year, had gone down about 15 years in a row, to levels of the 1960's.

So, your theories and scenarios are still pie-in-the-sky, with no basis in reality.

It would never enter my head that my wife should be armed with a pistol as a means of strangulation prevention. Because there are other methods.

So when the strangler breaks into your house at night while you're away, what will your wife do to save herself? Call the cops? How will she protect herself during the time it takes the police to arrive on the scene?

They are the most effective means of stopping a crime against yourself. I'll trot out the statistics again for you if you wish.

My main point is that society is better off without firearms.

Right. Rapists having their way, criminals beating their victims into a bloody pulp is preferable, and criminals being succesful invading occupied homes with a high chance of injury to the occupants are all better than a few hundred criminals suffering fatal injuries.

People who defend themselves against violent crime in the united states using a firearm have lower rates of injury and the crime being completed when they use a firearm than when they comply with the attacker, resist with no weapon, or resist with some other weapon.

This is just out of curiosity (and because you probably have the stats more readily on hand than I do, whereas I wouldn't know where to look for them), but how often when a firearm is recorded as being 'used in self-defence' is the weapon actually fired? Or in other words how often is merely seeing a gun sufficient deterrent to a criminal?

Right, the rest of the western world is just a bloody pulp and overrun with rape victims.

Lets see, "Now all Males will have to check in with the shireff their "Guns" (remember from the military that your firearm is a "Piece" and the THING in your pants is your "GUN!!!!!!!!!")and may only check them out on perscribed days when allowed by whomever??? Oh brother???!!!!

ThankThe Almighty I can still buy guns and ammo at my WallyWorld in Clinton!! Good prices too. Too bad they don't sell pistols also.

So a single socialist member of the Scottish parliament wants to ban air guns and it is treated here as if this is what is going to happen in England.

Well, look who started the thread.

When you're a rootin' tootin' cowboy, Scotland and England are the same place.

If you had the first idea of what you are talking about you would know that 'gunpowder/Blackpowder' firearms including handguns are legal in the UK.:S

The only handguns to escape the ban were:

* Antique and Muzzle-loading black powder guns
* Guns of historic interest whose ammunition is no longer available ('Section 7.1' weapons)
* Guns of historic interest with current calibres ('Section 7.3' weapons)
* Guns which fall outside the Home Office definition of "Handguns" (e.g. NSRA "Long Arms", and Long-Barreled Handguns both Small- and Full-bore), where their dimensions - usually barrel length, but also overall firearm length, rules them out of the Home Office definitions, so for legal purposes, they are treated as Rifles.

Guns of historic interest are ones typically manufactured before 1919. Since Section 7.3 historic weapons use currently available ammunition, they must be kept at a secure designated site such as the Bisley camp.

And rimfire weapons including semi automatic rifles. Shotguns are also legal as are bolt action rifles of any calibre or non semi automatic rifles.

Then, why are the Olympic shooting teams having to leave country to practice? Is there something I'm missing on?

Calm it mate, they dont know fuck all about it but think they do.

They clearly think that Scotland is under the same laws as England & Wales: Incorrect

...and somehow the topic has diverted from air weapons to live firing handguns (as every thread remotely to do with weapons, violence seems to)

Yup...seems like there's always people ready to blame the tool rather than the user, huh? :P;):)

Clearly. Its only the pistol teams that are forced to train abroad, however there is a move to allow them an exemption.

Aren't the pistol events 22 rimfire, or am I mistaken? It seems odd that they'd allow the other eventers to practice, but not the pistol team.

I should have written rimfire rifles and carbines rater than weapons. Rimfire pistols are included in the ban (Which doesn't make any sense at all)

www.thesun.co.uk riddle of the man" killed by an air rifle"
A mans body was found peppered with wounds from an airgun in a feild :S

So?

Story link: http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2006600209,00.html

It's not clear that it was the pellet gun that killed him. He could have been already dead when some kid wandered by and shot him with a pellet gun.

Would a single incident of an object being used to commit murder, serve as sufficient justification to ban and confiscate such objects nationwide, in your mind?
