Is church a fashion show?

Recommended Posts

It seems to me that people get all snazzed up when they go to church to show off their fancy clothes and show off their status in society by how nice their husband/wife and darling little kids look in their sunday clothes. I'm sure god doesn't care what you wear to church, he's against vanity (except when it comes to himself) so why does everyone get so dressed up for church?
We die only once, but for such a very long time.

probably for the same reason that they get dressed up to go out on Sat. night for dinner and a movie. They might even take a shower if they are feeling generous to the people around them.

off to the bonfire with you :P

So the penalty for dressing up is being burned alive!

Must weigh more than a duck.

Who cares if someone dresses up or if someone doesn't dress up for Church? Judging eitherway isn't very caring.

The reality of church going is that many traditional protestant churches have a congregation that cares about how you dress. A large majority of non-trad churches have people in jeans and t-shirts, etc. Then again, its more of a "younger" crowd at those churches.

WWJD? Well, he wore very expensive garments. For example he wore 1 piece underware which was incredibly expensive during his lifetime.

My fathers friend owned a drive-in theater.
On Sunday mornings, they set up a podium in the front with a microphone hooked into the speaker system.

For 25 years, they had 7am and 10am services.
People in their cars/trucks and pulling boats full of fishing poles.

People who may not own a suit would come every Sunday and then spend time fishing with their kids. To me, that is a better thing.

When the guy died, my dad got funding to set up a similar setup and had it built at another site.

I wear the same thing to church that I would wear any other day of the week. Usually either jeans and a pull over shirt or during the summer shorts and a t-shirt.

There are those at our church that wear suit & tie, but its not the norm. Even the pastor doesn't wear a suit.

And it's not one of these new upstarts that caters to the young type church. It is a Methodist church that was founded in the 1800's. Of course we do have contemporary music.

I think you should dress in a way that is respectful. For some, that's a suit. For others, it may just be slacks and a knit shirt. However, it's more important to get there and be obedient to God in worship regardless of what you're wearing. Ultimately, God cares about your heart and not what you’re wearing. It shouldn’t matter what others think about you in that regard. You shouldn’t be there to impress them.

Some people get dressed up to go to 'fine' restauarants and are deeply troubled by the yuppie crowd that shows up in more casual attire. It has nothing to do with impressing the youngsters, but rather some strange sense of decorum. They can do whatever they want, but I'm not paying decent money on food if I have to dress uncomfortably to do so.

Guess it must have just been the churches in my small town, cause everytime I saw people going to church they were all dressed up and the few times I went to church with my grandparents I was made to wear a dress shirt, slacks, and a tie, which of course I hated wearing at that time, didn't help that I'm a non-believer and didn't want to go anyways I suppose.
