What is a hero?

Recommended Posts

Fact is a grenade generally has an 8 second delay and one confronted with a thrown grenade immeidiate reaction is to attempt to grab it and toss it away before it explodes. In these cases grateful buddies who survive are anxious to reward the one who attempted to rid themselves of the danger. I have been there and although never had to react to this paricular situation am aware of the particulars. Medals cost nothing and I do not mind the awarding of medals but my experience is that most instances have little real "heroism" attached.

What grenade would that be, that has an 8 second time delay? The old "pineapple" grenade had a 4-5 second delay fuse, as does the current US issue M67 grenade.

A platoon sergeant who stops a man from bleeding to death, stays an extra night in the field when he could have left on the last chopper, and gets killed early the next morning. He was and still is my hero.

For me this is the ultimate in heroism; an individual putting others before himself, especially under circumstances where there is time to make a considered decision.

Prima donna footballers scoring the winning goal don't really come into the heroism bracket do they?

'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

If you are ex military I would like to have a word with whomever trained you.

Picking a grenade up is absolutley the last thing you want to do, in many cases there is no safe direction to throw it, while it is in the air it will give you and your friends a nice shower, and furthermore it probably will just go off in your hand next to your head.

If you are in a fighting position the thing to do is have a grendade sump and USE it.

If you are without such, then get the fuck out of the area or behind something and get flat.

I suspect someone has been watching movies.

I guess all our contries enemies are soooooo stupid they don't know how to cook one off.:S

I remember there used to be this NCO who used to demonstrate how powerful thunderflashes were by putting one under a old British Army helment (Not the new type) he'd then stand on the rims one foot on either side and when it went off it would lift off the ground a little. One day he did it one time to often, at the top of the helment was a rivet, this time it was loose and when the TF went off the rivet blew straight upwards into his nads, f**k that was funny!:D

Oh Vortex, don't you know you aren't a hero unless you make millions every year and drive fancy cars, drink all hours of the night and wear lots of "bling":S

Well, guess that rules me out then ( apart from the drinking all night :)

The M67 grenade has a "five" second fuse. However, it's the lowest bidder that makes them and I've seen them go off in as little as three seconds, never more than five.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

A hero is in the eye of the beholder.

A man saving a kitten from a tree is a hero in the eyes of the little kid whose cat was just saved.

A soldier who jumps on a live grenade to save his men is a hero in the hearts of his men and fellow soldiers.

A mother who stretches every penny to keep food on the table is a hero in the eyes of her hungry family.

Negative consequence is not a prerequisite, but it does get more attention.

That is the best answer yet.

Yup. According to United Blood Services, I am a hero for giving blood.

I am a hero to anyone who receives my blood.

I don't know what percentage of Medals of Honor have been awarded for "jumping on a live grenade" but the truth is in the majority of cases where this has happened it is a result of a soldier seeing the grenade and realizing that the only chance he may have is containing the explosion by trapping it under his helmet. There is no time to think of "saving his buddies". It is merely a move of desperation in attempting to survive. Lets stop the BS

Look up Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham and give yourself a reality check. Start with what you actually know.

Edit: In fact, here - this is what a hero looks like.

jason capped the grenade with his helmet and then laid his body on the helmet.

dude willingly sacrificed himself to save others. i am not even going to try to convince anyone. if you have to ask you will never know.

and that's no BS.
namaste, motherfucker.

And that's all that needs to be said right there, willingly or not, his life was still given and others lived.

It seems where ever you turn these days someone is being proclaimed a "hero". But just what is a hero?

First one Google finds: "a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength".

For example, 9/11 hijackers fit the definition perfectly. Of course people tend to apply such definitions very subjectively.

bsbd!
