Another good reason to join the military

Recommended Posts

US servicemen and women are covered by a component of SGLI, known as TSGLI (Traumatic injury Servicemembers Group Life Insurance). The max payout isn't as high, but the minimum isn't as low. It covers things like limb loss, brain injury, incapacitation, etc.

The trade-off is that wounded US vets receive far better care, in dedicated facilities. No other country comes close. My own compensation aside, if I had to add all the cost factors for my recovery, my bill has got to be somewhere in the millions of dollars right now.

Certain US Special Forces re-enlistees are seeing re-enlistment bonuses as high as $150,000 (very specific guidelines need to be met).

edit to add: Having said that, money should not be a motivating factor for joining the military in my opinion. There has to be more to it.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

If I could, I would join just for the experience, not the money, what good is the money if you can't walk? I am not having a dig here to anyone disabled, but I don't think I am brave enough to go on living if I had some IED going off in front of me sending me 40meters away and my feet somewhere else. The TA is fine if you are a student, you don't get sent off for too long to the desert, and everything (as far as I kow this covers university fees, and living costs) is paid for you. I am not sure about the pay in the "normal" military though.

Is there a signing bonus for new recruits if they are signing on for six years and Helicopter Flight training?

Honestly, I don't know. That type of sign-up involves sending the recruit to WOCS as well. Bonuses for officers (if I'm correct) don't really exist. There are a couple reasons, officers get paid way more than enlistees, and that pay has premiums (like flight status pay, etc).

Well, yes, I am new here, and I don't really know anyone, so I don't want to come across as Mr. Ass!

Well, don't hold back now...jeezz.. :P

Edit to add: you know how it is, when you miss the "good stuff"...like missing out on a good joke. You can always PM me...I'm still interested. ;)

Yeah that's mostly for Warrant's and senior NCO's looking to get out at 20, they offer them a six figure re-up to stay in a few years after they are eligible to retire. As for the rest of us lowly door-kickers, i thin we're looking at a 2.5 multiplier right now, which when you break it down doesn't amount to crap. I did the math the other day and if I remember right i'll be getting maybe 10K at the most if I re-up while in Iraq in a few months, and that's for like 3 years. Let me double check on the number though, I may be mistaken.

It does depend on ETS and MOS as well. Guys who re-upped while I was over there were getting $22-25K to re-enlist. Those were 11B in a regular line unit. SF chaps as I understand it are getting a minimum $40K+ if they re-up while deployed.

I wish that were true but unfortunately not, I just talked to the re-up guy this week and I think he said all 5 MOS's are capped at 30K right now, my team SGT just re-upped and got I think 30K, my warrant got the 150K. It's not lookin good for me to get a big chunk of change while I'm over there, and considering my ex-wife pretty much got my whole re-up bonus the first time I guess I'll never get a big ol' bonus[:/]. I did make out good when I joined though, I opted for the college money instead of cash.

Macho crap? guess again, I left her, she had a bit of an issue when it came to telling the truth about quite a few things, and there are rumors of certain indescretions when the military had me out of town, but i never proved them so i never accused her of anything

GQ is one of the more reasonable people on these boards, and pretty decent even with people he disagrees with. That makes one out of the two of you, apparently.

In akarunway's defense we did have a little discussion via PM after he posted this and he was more than personable, I appreciate you guys stickin up for me though, my hat goes off to you.

And as for what rehmwa said, people always accuse me of trying to bully people, but when have you ever seen me threaten someone. Saying something like I dare you to say that to a soldiers face isn't me sayin I'll kick your ass, I'm just trying to discourage people from saying things that they wouldn't say to another persons face, it's about being a man. Thanks rehm;)

£500,000 might sound like alot but in the UK the price of the average house is £180,000 if you can't work due to those injuries and are in your 20's or early 30's that doesn't leave you much to live on. When I was in if I was killed whilst on duty my insurance would only have paid out £20,000. Loose a leg and I think it was less than £10,000. Pretty crap really.
