The 7th of Dec 1942 was when the US was finally dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 2nd World War, which had been going for over 3 years at the time. The US had managed to finish WW2 within 3 years, but has not even managed to contain the war in Iraq in more than the same timeframe. What's up with that?
