orribolollie 0 #27 December 6, 2006 C'mon O - don't give up the rant now. This kind of wishy washy set of convictions doesn't really fit the role of raving extremist well. If you don't hate Zippo and Amazon in this thread, then we can't take you seriously. Reply: So a stand point on SUV's makes you a raving extremist? And here was me thinking I was gonna need to grow a beard for that! OK, so you dont wind up thinking I posted to massage my ego let me clarify. I dont hate every driver of SUVs. I think they have been suckered by the people I do hate. The car manufacturers and the people who market these things. As has been mentioned by someone else; if you live on a farm then sure id totally agree they are a useful tool. If you like I will answer one reply here specifially, to the the guy who jokes of refilling his stationary SUV -laugh it up you have that luxury, while you laugh your troops die in Iraq stabilising the supply of the fuel you pour down the drain. If the human race actually manages to live a couple of hundred years more it will look back at us with disgust for the way we supersized our lives, ignoring even laughing it seems at the consequences. billvon 3,132 #28 December 6, 2006 >SUVs..so many morons out there think that 4WD makes them invincible. Yep. I recall one storm in Utah where we (and a lot of other people) were trying to get to Alta. It had snowed, melted, refrozen and was now snowing again. By the time we got to the parking lot, about the only ones left were the Subaru Legacy AWD's and the buses.
shropshire 0 #29 December 6, 2006 I have a 4x4 (Landrover) because I like to drive off road. I, dont have one to be invincible - I know the the NCAP rating makes it less safe than an Focus!! in some accidents. It's a right good laugh. Now people with Hummers - they ARE dicks (.)Y(.) rehmwa 2 #30 December 6, 2006 Odd, you'd think those in Utah are used to driving in snow and ice. When we lived in the DC area it was fun to see the city folk stuck on patches of ice and sliding off the road in their 4WD SUVs and Subaru AWD's etc while we drove just fine in our rear wheel drive car. Honestly, I actually saw a 4WD stuck in place on a FLAT sheet of ice - it was really funny. We had one storm where Kim wanted to get some milk and she took our regular car, not the little 4WD (geo tracker at the time - we're dispicable for owning an SUV I guess). Just because she liked the car better and it was only about 6 inches of snow - NBD. Hopped in the car, shot to the store. She got funny looks, the only people in the store were the "head of households" that "dared the blizzard" to stock up on supplies. I'm not even sure if she bothered with more than a light coat. Of course, the only snow I ever saw in Phoenix was barely a dusting and people were having accidents everywhere..... Experience driving in the snow and a bit of ability to drive still helps more than anything. And it wouldn't have mattered too much if we drove an SUV, a spec, a low AWD, or a dump truck... still, I think traction control and anti-lock brakes are pretty neat In Minnesota, you have to watch out for other extreme - recent immigrants with SUVs that think they can go 70 MPH during an ice storm. And winter tailgaters ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

vortexring 0 #36 December 6, 2006 My neighbour bought a BMW X3. 'Very nice' was my comment as I got in my own car as he was busy finishing off cleaning his vehicle one Sunday afternoon(Polishing the tyres I may add). One of my mates in work recently bought a BMW X5. Eventually he let me borrow it for an hour. Ah, the look on neighbours face as I pulled into the driveway! DrewEckhardt 0 #39 December 6, 2006 Quote Well said Bill. After saving up a few Ks working in MN 6 yrs ago, decide time to buy new vehicle. I was going to buy a TransAM 1yr old for 24 traction control, but fact is in the midwest, not all roads to pwerhouses are plowed. So I wanted power so got the 98 5.9 jeep which had comparable HP, but not as good on gas. I can go where I need to work. I rather have a low to ground car. I like track and turns. Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Jaguar, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Suburu, Volkswagen all sell all-wheel-drive cars. Many of those companies will even sell you a station wagon that accelerates well, handles well, and hauls your stuff. With snow tires the better ones are almost impossible to get stuck (the classic Audi AWD system has a torsen center differential with electronic locking on both ends) as long as you don't get them high centered. QuoteThe ironic thing is that in Oregon, the vehciles you see wrecked going up to Mt hood? SUVs..so many morons out there think that 4WD makes them invincible. 4wd lets you accelerate quicker on ice and snow but does nothing to help you stop. Without a center differential, it becomes impossible to lock the brakes at one end (front, you go straight) without locking them at the other (rear, things can get exciting). That said, four appropriate width snow tires on a 2wd car do more good than AWD.

Some SUVs are quite small and get relatively good mileage for the bad aerodynamics they have. I think there is a lot to criticize in vehicles that get lousy mileage, but the SUV is usually singled out, and that doesn't make sense. So let's pick on all vehicles that guzzle gas, not just the SUV.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
steveorino 7 #45 December 7, 2006 QuoteFor folks that live on farms or in the mountains - SUVs may be the best choice. Mine is about the only house in the suburban street that does not have a SUV in its driveway. The Chicago freeways are choked with SUVs commuting into the city. At the weekend, the country club parking lot is full of SUVs. The shopping mall lots are full of SUVs. At 8:30a.m. the streets around the grade schools are clogged with SUV moms taking their kids to school (only the lower classes use the free school bus anymore). No-one will convince me that these SUVs are necessary or even desirable for suburbanites except as a fashion accessory. Very telling comments (can you say hypocrite) for someone who posted this thread "Things I believe" Mind your own business and I'll mind mine ... Don't tell me what kind of car to drive. Since oil supply and pollution are problems (and they truly are) let the market deal with it by properly allocating costs of dealing with those problems to the price of fuel. rehmwa 2 #48 December 7, 2006 QuoteRight now the costs of SUV (and other vehicle) ownership are NOT properly allocated. Seems demand and supply are doing their jobs just fine. Just because some have personal opinions that would require additional, (subjective, PC motivated, petty, arbitrary punishing) fines/fees of owners of low mileage cars. Even though they likely already pay more in vehicle price, taxes, operation and maintenance........ ...
