Pro-Life views under attack at Carleton U

What's regrettable about that? If students want to fund their recreational activities, great. The poing of those dues is to support things that they want to do. The great bit about a large university is that there are enough willing participants for every 'minor' sport one can think of. At Cal I learned to sail, kayak, play racquetball and improved my tennis at varying costs from free to minor.

But why should sports programs get a larger share than social, political, support, arts..etc? Sports are great but the reality is that anything pertaining to arts or social awareness tends to come second in funding priority at too many schools. The students who aren't athletic but have a passion for theatre, politics, third world development pay the same tuition as football players so why should thier interests only get a residual share of the funding after athletics

***Colleges (along with all the schools below) should do all they can to encourage athletic pursuits. The alternative is already hard to miss.

I would agree with you at the elementary school and high school level since obesity is becoming a national health disaster, but by the university level, if they do not understand the importance of keeping themselves fit it is too late.
My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

simple, reduce tuition, let students form and fund the clubs they want on their own - it's not free, and if funding comes from taxes instead of tuition, then that's even worse

I agree with your argument that activities should be self funded but if that is to be the case then so should athletics. Otherwise the athletic students get thier interests subsidised by the tuition of non-athletic students who have to pay out of thier own pockets to support thier own activities. In reality the schools should get out of funding all extracuricular.

Under current accreditation criteria, that would be almost impossible to do and remain accredited.

of course, another result of over-governing

see what a big hole we are already in
and some think digging more is the right answer - they are downright indignant about it even
