To My Conservative Brothers and Sisters,

I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week's election. You're worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don't want it to go. Your 12-year Republican Revolution has ended with so much yet to do, so many promises left unfulfilled. You are in a funk, and I understand.

Well, cheer up, my friends! Do not despair. I have good news for you. I, and the millions of others who are now in charge with our Democratic Congress, have a pledge we would like to make to you, a list of promises that we offer you because we value you as our fellow Americans. You deserve to know what we plan to do with our newfound power -- and, to be specific, what we will do to you and for you.

Thus, here is our Liberal's Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives:

Dear Conservatives and Republicans,

I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:

1. We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you "unpatriotic" simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.

2. We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be "different" or "immoral." Who you marry is none of our business. Love and be in love -- it's a wonderful gift.

3. We will not spend your grandchildren's money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It's your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.

4. When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. They deserve to live. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake or a lie.

5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay. And when stem cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that affect you and your loved ones, we'll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too.

6. Even though you have opposed environmental regulation, when we clean up our air and water, we, the Democratic majority, will let you, too, breathe the cleaner air and drink the purer water.

7. Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.

8. We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as a consenting adult is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.

9. We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren't much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, pick up another sport. We will make our streets and schools as free as we can from these weapons and we will protect your children just as we would protect ours.

10. When we raise the minimum wage, we will pay you -- and your employees -- that new wage, too. When women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too.

11. We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don't put those beliefs into practice. In fact, we will actively seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs ("Blessed are the poor," "Blessed are the peacemakers," "Love your enemies," "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God," and "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn't just bless America, he blesses everyone. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism -- starting with the fanaticism here at home, thus setting a good example for the rest of the world.

12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray. Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.

I promise all of the above to you because this is your country, too. You are every bit as American as we are. We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans -- and for the rest of the world.

Factual errors or omissions, such as the the innocent mistake of Clinton, will happen, though. We are human.

5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay - eventually. And when stem cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that affect you and your loved ones, we'll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too. Now, Rob Reiner has invited me to his place for lard omelets. Thanks to universal health care, the taxpayer can pay for our healthcare, too.

We seriously considered banning it, but thought we'd wait until we have enough votes to invoke cloture before we banned conservatives once and for all.

7. Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you. We'll also ban guns because you shouldn't be able to protect yourself from the thousands of individual murderers. We will protect you, dammit! DO NOT EVEN THINK OF PROTECTING YOURSELVES!

8. We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb - just your children's. What you do there as a consenting adult is your business - what your children do as minors is none of your business, though, only ours. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived. We will continue to maintain that your children need protection from you.

9. We will not take away your hunting guns - only those that could possibly hunt humans! If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren't much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, pick up another sport, despite Constitutional protections. We will make our streets and schools as free as we can from these weapons so that any killer will continue to recognize that schools are open season where no defenses to the intended victims are available. and we will protect your children just as we would protect ours, which means we won't protect them - they should understand why they have zero protection at school.

10. When we raise the minimum wage, we will pay you -- and your employees -- that new wage, too. Gone are the days when employers make more than employees! Sure, you take the risks, run the business, and do those things but, rest assured YOU will make the same amount of money as your employees - minimum wage. We'll ensure it. And those months when money is tight and after payroll and taxes you can't afford to pay yourself, we'll make sure that you pay heavily for not paying yourself minimum wage. When women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too. Nobody else will pay them. We will control all.

11. We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don't put those beliefs into practice. Just make no public statements or displays of religion. Pray in private - airplanes and airports aren't places where you should be doing this, unless you are other-than-Christian religion. In fact, we will actively seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs ("Blessed are the poor, and this comes from Michael Moore," "Blessed are the peacemakers, not rabblerousing filmmakers," "Love your enemies, unless it's the NRA, GM, etc," "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God, and harder still for a fat fuck rich man," and "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me, so consider all of us to be Charlton Heston."). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn't just bless America, he blesses everyone - except out government cannot mention God at all. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism -- starting with the fanaticism here at home, and ending with eliminating intolerance of religion here at homem thus setting a good example for the rest of the world that religion is not acceptable. Secular fanatacism - that's the way!

12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich, except John Kerry or any of the Senate leadership. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people, which would mean that Congresss will be empty. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray - not anymore, starting today. So when our corrupt Democrat is raided by the FBI, we will say "good riddance." Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.

I promise all of the above to you because this is your country, too. You are every bit as American as we are, though it hurts to say that. We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans -- and for the rest of the world.

Notice how he says they don't want to take away hunting weapons, obviously he does want to take away non-hunting weapons, and I think he'd prefer the hunting weapons be locked up by the gov't until you are actually on your way to hunt.

Michael Moore's dignified letter is, on its face, "dignified." There are plenty of things that are facially "dignified." Lethal injection is "dignified" but it is still killing somebody. Saying that the Bible does not condone homosexuality is far more dignified than saying "God hates fags" but, despite the choice of words, the idea is the same. I could say, "Please go fornicate yourself," to someone, which is more dignified than "fuck you," but, again, the idea is the same. (Note - I am not saying this to arcimund - it was only by ay of example.)

"Crass" - an adjective that describes something that is unrefined to the point where it lacks sensibility.

So my letter is crass and rude? It makes no sense? The difference between my post and Moore's letter is - my underlying points are valid and put in a blunt and rude way. Moore's points are written in a "dignified" way, but the underlying concepts are rude, crass, objectionable, untrue and lack sensibility.

Here is what is crass and rude about Moore's letter:

He should not be able to suggest this and keep a straight face. The Dems were in on it, too. The crass and rude insinuation in this "dignified" statement is that conservatives deny these things. This is crass and rude and an outright lie. The EPA was forwarded by a Republican Administration. It leaves out guys like McCain, who sponsored a bill that would set greenhouse gas standards with Lieberman. And what of the envirnmental policy rollback reforms of the 1995 Congress? Didn't really happen.

Kyoto? It's got Al Gore's signature on it, and is pure symbolism. In 1997, before the Kyoto Protocol was finalized, the Senate VOTED UNANIMOUSLY (95-0) in a resolution sponsored by Senators Hagel (Republican) and Byrd (Democrat) that the US would not be signatory to any agreement that didn't include timetables, standards, etc. for developing nations. Clinton never even sent it to the Senate for ratification.

So let's talk about "crass" and "rude" when dealing with FACTS instead of puffery and trumped-up lies. His statement is unmerited and insulting.

And note - I am NOT A REPUBLICAN.

Finally, it suggests that Dems will have the power to DENY the use of clean air and water to Republicans. This is "crass" personified, since crass describes a lack of sensibility.

Gee, um, Bush is using "every single resource" like wiretaps to "protect" the American people. Let's get real here...

The problem here is that they seek to insert themselves into the bedrooms and wombs of minors. This is just my belief - parents should be responsible for their kids. And if a parent needs to consent to a kid having her ear pierced, and for every other medical or surgical procedure, that parent should need to consent to a surgical procedure liek abortion. PERIOD.

A parent doesn't want sex education for his kids done at public school? Doesn't want her kids exposed to condoms? Then the parent should be respected to ensure that the government keeps out of their children's bedrooms. Make sense?

It's crass and rude to suggest that it doesn't happen on both sides. It does.

It is crass and rude to suggest that weapons should be used only for hunting. It is undignified to omit the Second Amendment from this as if it can be ignored. Despite the gun laws, school shootings just kep happening. The kids are NOT being protected. They were NOT protected. Everyone knows that the defenseless are in schools because there will be no guns there.

Finally, insulting is this "we will protect your children." Wrong. This is the same as the Catholic Church saying, "We will protect your sons." I will protect my children. To me, you are a threat.

I was gravely insulted by this - "we will pay you -- and you employees -- that new minimum wage." That says - it does not infer - it STATES DIRECTLY that everybody will make the same thing - minimum wage.

And it also says who will be paying it - "we will pay you." There is a word for that - "communism." The government will pay everyone the same. Even you, Narci, will make minimum wage. But hey, he put it in a dignified way, right? The underlying thought, though, it mind-blowing. And why? Because Moore thinks that he will be an exception to this.

This is insulting. It's the Dems who are doing everything in their power to wipe religion off of the face of public discourse. The mere mention of it at school draws ire and lawsuits. They do not respect the rights of the religious to practice their religion - so long as they are Christian. The "wall between church and state." In the above, he stated that they intend for the stte to become everything. The effect of his postulate is to squeeze out religion.

That is crass and rude. By the way, I am atheist.

This i can agree with. But, I disagree that you go after your own first. You go after wrongdoers no matter where they are. And you know, considering the scandals, jail time, and other matters over the past few months, it appears that Bush's Department of Justice is doing a fine job purging the corrupt in the ranks, like Cunningham.

This is a thoughtful, reasonable argument. I'm not wholly convinced by your turnabout, but it's creative and definitely enough to form a "reasonable doubt" in some of the details. Some of your rebuttals of Moore's points are dead-on. Good work.

You like to repeat my word "crass" over and over, and in some items you might have a case of sorts, but in others you're on completely bizarre ground. Your list would sound rousing to an emotional jury, but do you actually want to defend each thing you said?

The most important insulting and crass statement is, "It's your checkbook, too..." No, it should be, "It is your checkbook, and nobody else's."

When he says "checkbook" he's not referring to your personal banking. He's referring to the government's checkbook which, by most accounts, is owned collectively.

If you reread it that way, it's hardly insulting or crass. It might be a lie of course -- but it's dignified.
