billvon 3,107 #4 November 20, 2006 >It is only a question of how many countries will damage thier >economies before they figure it out. Toyota has already realized that they can become the #1 automaker in the world by working on solutions instead of sticking their heads in the sand. Ask any Toyota exec if they think that trying to fix the problem is destroying them. Every time new science or technology comes along, companies can take two general paths. They can accept it and see how they can profit from it - or they can resist it and hope it goes away. The carriagemakers who thought they could convert their horse-drawn carriages to internal combustion engines? William Durant made the switch; you may have heard of his company, Buick (later General Motors.) Gottlieb Daimler realized he had to get away from making only horse-drawn carriages. He teamed up with Karl Benz. You may have heard of Mercedes-Benz; they've done OK by "believing the propaganda." The companies that stuck their heads in the sand, and thought that internal combustion engines were a passing fad, a propaganda ploy to replace the old reliable horse that the economy was based on? Well, you don't hear much about them. They're gone. Today the same thing is happening. Toyota is making a lot of money with their low-emissions cars, and is poised to become the largest automaker in the world. General Motors is floundering with its line of massive gas guzzlers. But even they are wising up; they're launching a plug-in hybrid project intended to hit the road in 3-4 years. Will that be enough to save them? We'll see. The smart money is on the future, not the past. Always has been. PV manufacturers are cleaning up - the worldwide demand is incredible. Hybrids are fetching a premium price. So yes, economies are going to be damaged (witness GM) and there's going to be a lot of turmoil in the coming decades. Want to avoid being on the losing side of the equation? Invest in the future rather than trying to hold onto the past and hoping all this "global warming nonsense" goes away.
Channman 2 #5 November 20, 2006 > "global warming nonsense" Global warming as preached is alot of nonsense, however new tecnology is leading the way to a better environment and more fuel efficent autos. This engine just keeps on going faster and faster using very little fuel.

Andy9o8 2 #14 November 20, 2006 QuoteI am not against newer tech fuel and cleaner running equipment. I am against lying and making up a reason to do it. While it will probably do no good, I'm going to go out on a limb here: Just because a certain issue is supported by some people who also happen to be "liberals" doesn't make it a lie. I suspect that if the global warming issue - framed exactly as it currently is - was an issue which, at its outset, was championed by conservatives you'd support it. But you're so obsessed with this paranoia that anything supported by "liberals" is evil bullshit that that becomes the beginning, middle and end of your analysis (to the extent there's any "analysis" at all). I am not a repub or dem. I do not like many things/programs Bush and the Repubs have done during their tenure so someone saying I support Bush no matter what is just plain BS. So, call me a conservative. I am proud of that label. the other side is the liberals (as defined today and I realize the title has been altered somewhat). billvon 3,107 #25 November 20, 2006 >Are those on the other side proud to be called libs? Absolutely. I'm all about new solutions to old problems. I didn't bitch about the cost of power out here - I put up a solar power system. I didn't just complain about the traffic and gas prices around here - I bike. At the company I work at, we thought cellphones should be better and cheaper. We didn't lobby the government to mandate lower prices. We designed our own standard, built phones and base stations, and sold them. Made money doing it, too. I am in favor of freedom of speech, action and belief, and think that people should be able to be any race/religion/sexual orientation without being discriminated against in any way. I think old ideas and traditions sometimes have merit, but should not be a barrier to new ideas and new roles for people. In other words, I'm a liberal.
