Target shooting Handguns!

Recommended Posts

I got the bug again to go out shooting my shotgun after a turkey shoot. I've really been interested in target shooting with handguns recently. I'm looking at some semiauto's in the .22 range. I've some opinions to what some good brands are, but what are you guys shooting?

I've put 1000's of rounds thru my Ruger with no problems

it is not a competition grade gun but accurate for sport, mine is the long tapered barrel with adjustable rear sight, changed the grips to wood with a thumb rest
Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.

Yup, that's pretty much where the discussion ends.

You could always buy a 1911 frame an a .22 conversion kit if you really wanted something different. I'd still rather buy a Ruger.

The Marvel kits are pretty nice from what I understand, but, like you, I'd still rather have the standalone weapon.

Well, cos it's a differnt class, for one. The Ruger, Colt Woodsman and GSP are all semi auto's. The Hammerli isn't.:)

t

Hammerli has a couple of semiauto target pistols...but don't those ones look bad-ass??? :$

Sure...and the break is so clean and smooth (and light) that if you farted on the firing line the weapon would fire.

Instead of buying a .22, we need to figure out how someone could make quality .45ACP ammo that you can buy 500rds in a box for $20 (or less) like .22.B|

Yeah it would... best I could find at www.ammoman.com was $139 for a 500 rd case of Speer Lawman 230 gr. FMJ. (they had Wolf for $119, but I won't touch that crap)

Speer Gold Dot 230 gr. is $239 / 500 rd. case.... yummy.... ;):)

So you can save about $60. Not bad. The problem with buying that much ammo (atleast for me) is that I'll go to the range and shoot all of that ammo in a day.

I won't touch Wolf either. I've seen WAY too many problems with powder amount, bad primers and warped cases that severely lodge, won't feed, eject, etc.

Wolf is great to shoot if you own a sub-$100 .45. Why? Well, by your weapon choice you obviously don't care and so shitty ammo shouldn't bother you.:D

:D:D:D For me, it's that damn lacquer...gunks up the chamber. I've seen a guy at the range have to use a squib rod to drive a Wolf case out of the chamber because the ejector tore through the rim. He's not a fan of Wolf anymore, either... ;)

The combo of Lawman FMJ for practice and Gold Dot for defense would work, though...same maker and similar weights.

And yeah...I know what you mean about shooting it up. The first time I took the Colt to the range I put 350 rds through it...

Before spending the $ on the ruger mk2 have the dealer show you how to breakdown and clean the gun.:o

IMO It's a Major PIA, check out another manufactor the ruger reminds me of a zip gun.

If anyone is driving thru Wa state and wants to pick up a slightly used Ruger get in touch.

It's not a big deal. You point the barell somewhat upwards when closing the mainspring housing and it just works. I need to get mine delivered so I can play with it again.

I have an old High Standard 22 auto that I've had since I was a kid. It has a fairly long barrel on it. I think it may be six inch. I'm too lazy to go dig it out and measure the barrel), but it is an amazingly good shooter. The trigger is light and crisp.

I've even shot the heads off grouse with it. Shot a duck out of the air with it once.

It does tend to jam lately (if it isn't kept clean, or in cold weather). I may have to have a gun smith take a look at it. I've got a lot of miles on it.....Steve1

Im with you slug, as far as a used one, broke it down witha friend of mine that is a total gun nut and had a hell of a time with that little fork stay in palce and that plug that goes through top getting it to stay. had to knock it dowm with the kaymirs of my 44 spec. Mercy me what a bugger. I had a P-85 9mm, have a p-97 45 ruger, quick breakdown..but that thing..ugh what hell for a used piece. I would buy new if you do get a ruger. putting a pistol together should not be a 2 man job.
