Rep. Rangel Seeks to Reinstate the Draft

Recommended Posts

None to me. I responded to he that said it would be a deterent to those who would declare war if their sons could get drafted.

Gotcha! i was thinking more of the entire proposal including the Public Service component. Can't understand why anyone would be opposed to it other than making up "what if....." senarios. P.S. component wouldn't have to be full time, maybe just a certain number of hours.

I'd answer but invariably you would resort to insults, and name calling, so why bother.

Yet another snipe-and-run while avoiding an excellent question that shows your principles are inconsistent -- or worse.

Sniping at me personally is the new favorite way to avoid admitting error.

Well, whatever works.

How often did you get to eat dinner with them?

Which would you prefer:

1. Support your family even though you don't get as much quality time with them.

2. Live on assistance from the Gov, but have plenty of time for your family?

I choose #1. By showing children that you have to be responsible and productive you are doing more for them than letting them think that it is OK for the Gov to take care of you.
.

Bingo! Just what my dad taught me.

Teaching your children values is "emotional abandonment" now????? I have always considered guiding your children in a positive direction to be a central task of parenthood.

Bull crap. My dad was an eigth grade drop out in rural KY. After WW2 he got his GED, then college degree. He was home builder. he was home most of the time. I too put myself through college, working 2-3 sometimes 4 jobs. I was home more than the average dad. Coached all the kids sports and took them camping, skiing, etc. I taught them you can make something of your life without others giving it to you.

I'm just talking about time. You say you had 3-4 jobs and plenty of time for your kids. I'm saying that is not possible.

In the most affluent society in the world, it's no more or less a right as police and fire protection, military protection, public school education and publicly-funded and maintained roads and highways which we take for granted as part of the social compact: citizens pay taxes, in exchange for which the government provides certain services.

Every other industrialized nation on the planet offers its citizens some manner of guaranteed health care, except the US. To me, that speaks volumes.

So, we have the US that is the most affluent, and all the others that provide health care and are not as rich?

So showing your kids how to be good parents and supporting them is abandonment?

If more people grew up with an idea that they need to take care of themselves, the world would be a better place.

Right now we have people on welfare with Xboxes. Is that better?

I think a draft is a bad idea. If you put people in a combat situation who haven't signed up, haven't agreed, don't think it's right, and don't want to be there, that seems like a recipe for disaster.

I think that's true if you're talking about a Vietnam era draft--Some people get drafted, and some people (usually those with money) don't. I think that mandatory service, like many other civilize countries utilize, might work. Of course, I would have felt more comfortable supporting such a program a few years ago when

A. It would have affected me, thereby, making me look like less of a hypocrite for supporting it

and

B. I had more faith in the people who decide when we go to war.

Origionally I answerd no but after reading I would be temted to answer Yes even though I dissaprove of war.
Having just left Norway after 6 months there, I noticed they have compulsory military training and they are a peaceful nation.

Getting away from an all-volunteer military would tend to cut down on the willingness of the people so inducted to do a good job. So if your objective is to just get cannon fodder it would work, but would not produce a _better_ military.

In theory this would be true but in reality it is not.

You have to take into consideration all the 'wanna be Rambos' out there that sign up with the present sceme and then anticipate a broader spectrum of people in the military that would eventuate into more rational and educated decisions. Rather than the 'Schmoke em out' and ask later attitude America has at the Moment!

that shit gets you ALL in the shit each time and costs American lives, trust, and your so called world power deminishes further and further!

What do you do? Send them a postcard from time to time?

That's messed up. Playstation2 has a much larger number of games.

In VietNam the well connected found ways of getting around it, like finding their kids a billet in the NG.

Or going to Oxford!

Any right thinking person would go to Cambridge. However, winning a Rhodes Scholarship is not a matter of being well connected.

No you show them how to be good parents and providers by EXAMPLE. You show them how to be productive members of society by being one yourself.

Do you let your kids go with you to cash the welfare checks? Is that better for them to grow up and be dependant on the Gov?

Neither is backstabbing those who helped you change your draft status.

No, abandonment is abandonment. If you abandon them because you're working four jobs, it's still abandonment. Kids need parents, not a flyby visit once a day.

So you would rather be jobless and spend time with your kids...Thus teaching them that lifestyle.

Or would you rather show them how to be a productive member of society?

Its amazing how honorable actions can be put in a smarmy context.

It's amazing how winning a Rhodes Scholarship can be made out to be dishonorable.

>So you would rather be jobless and spend time with your kids.

I would rather have a well-paying job and spend time with my kids. Kids need parents. Period.

>Or would you rather show them how to be a productive member of society?

If I worked three or four jobs, the person showing them how to live would be the nanny that takes care of them while I'm not there. Do you want your kids to be nannies?

If I want to just support a kid financially, I'll send money to a Tijuana orphanage. If I want to be a parent, I have to spend time with my kids.
