Erroll 80 #1 November 15, 2006 Same-sex Bill gets Parliament go-ahead. QuoteParliament on Tuesday approved the controversial Civil Unions Bill, which provides for same-sex marriage, making South Africa the first African country to do so and one of only a few in the world. QuoteThe Bill provides for opposite-sex and same-sex couples of 18 years or older to solemnise and register a voluntary union, either by marriage or civil partnership. QuotePan Africanist Congress of Azania MP Motsoko Pheko said same-sex marriages "are so repugnant" that only three other countries in the world have allowed it. He described South Africa as a country that suffers from Eurocentric leanings on the matter. Are we now with the good guys or the bad guys?

Skyrad 0 #3 November 15, 2006 Gay people are going to remain gay wether they are allowed to marry or not, marriage promotes monogomy, the more people not shagging around the less likely the spread of STDs (This goes for hetrosexuals just as much). These aren't religious ceromonies but legal ones. If a Gay couple have lived together as a couple for the last forty years and one dies the other should be protected with the same legal rights as a straight couple. If before one dies they are on a life support machine and permission is required to turn it off who should have the right to be consulted? The partner of forty years or the only remaining blood relative (for example) a nephew who the person hadn't seen for the last five years? Obviously the partner. I belive that South Afrca has done a good thing here. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Erroll 80 #4 November 15, 2006 Quote I believe that South Afrca has done a good thing here. As a South African I agree wholeheartedly! I was mostly trying to elicit responses from those that don't agree. (Such as the example highlighted in my original post). What is also worth noting is the fact that in most of Africa, homosexuality is a complete taboo. Thus, for SA to be one of the very few countries in the world to take this step is quite a bold move.
