Well. Since I quit H/S and got a GED to join the military (scored in the top 1% in military testing) and I follow ALL the news (but won't listen to right wing garbage) where does that put me according to the polls?:P
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

Seeing the quality and intelligence of the responses there must not be any Limbaugh listeners on line right now;):D

One thing I can't stand when I'm in the US is that gettng decent news of whats happening outside of the country is pretty hard. There are no decent news papers and stories such as 'a house was burgarlarized last night down town and graffiti left in the kitchen' make news openers.:S:S:S
No wonder there is such massive ignorance amoung the general population of international affairs and a egocentric outlook on life. I don't think the attitudes shown in the Borat film are anything but wideheld amoung the majority of Americans. Obviously that doesn't hold true for all Americans but I do belive it is true of the majority.

That is too bad. It is hard for me to understand how you can come to this conclusion but it is what it is.

If only...if only...:D;)
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh

Make light!

That's an unfair generalization, or at the least, a largely obsolete one. Sure, maybe a small town's newspaper and the local broadcast news have mainly local stories, but the major newspapers have international coverage, as do the major networks, and especially now, so do the major cable news stations. Plus, locally-produced news sources have greatly diminished in relevance with the availability of news off the Internet. I haven't subscribed to a newspaper delivery in years, and rarely read a "paper" newspaper, but I still get tons of news every day - mostly off the Internet.

Also, for what it's worth, bear in mind that in Europe, for example, so much more news qualifies as "international" for the simple reason that there are so many countries all in close proximity, whereas you can travel for 2,000 miles or more in one direction in North America and end your journey in the same country you started out in.

I have traveled throughout Europe and South America, as well as across the US and Canada. I found plenty of Europeans who are pretty ignorant about international affairs, and completely clueless about America; and there are plenty of Americans and Canadians who are very well-informed about international affairs. I find that less-educated people generally know less about international affairs; but I didn't find that in higher proportion in North America than in Europe.

I think you've over generalized. A parallel observation could be made of other parts of the world (including Europe) where there aren't as many new sources, and the press is not unhindered everywhere.

I think it boils down to simply that people see the news of the US everywhere, yet, it doesn't have equal flow in the opposite direction (add to that, that many don't like the news coming out of the US too). That isn't necessarily the US's fault. In some parts of the world, it's even embraced and encouraged.
