NickDG 23 #1 November 8, 2006 Well, I awoke to a newspaper and the headline proclaiming "Our Long National Nightmare is Over . . ." Finally, Americans spoke up! Tired of a President who tramples the U.S. Constitution he swore to defend, tired of the war, tired of back room deals, lies, and a Republican machine that sought to destroy the reputations of its enemies with no regard for the truth. Never again will the people get caught napping. Never again will we let apathy prevent us from paying attention. Yes, that was the headline which ran in many newspapers on August 8, 1974 describing the resignation of President Richard Nixon . . . Over the last six years we, or at last count 57 percent of us, have had to re-live that nightmare because despite how impossible it sounds we forgot the lessons of Richard Nixon and went to sleep again. But it wasn't exactly the same this time. During the Nixon years we were too naive and too trusting of government and we could be forgiven for that, this time around we were just plain stupid. It will take years to repair the damage that Bush (I'm a uniter, not a divider) has done, it will take years to restore our credibility (Saddam + Iraq = the World Trade Center) in the world, and it will take years for our military to recover from being jerked around by someone who deserted the military himself but now proclaims himself a "war president" like we wouldn't notice he manufactured the invasion of Iraq (they tried to kill my father). So goodbye and fuck you Newt Gingridge, goodbye and fuck you to the religious fundies who have no business in our bedrooms, and goodbye and fuck you to the idiots that think democracy is capitalism, and (maybe not goodbye unfortunately) but a big Demo fuck you to Rush, Hannity, and Billo! We just have to survive another two years of Bush the dope-lomat, unless the House starts impeachment procedures . . . Oh be still my heart . . . Jefferson, Hamilton, Handcock, and Franklin are smiling in their graves this day! NickD BASE
ExAFO 0 #2 November 8, 2006 I was quite amused to see Santorum give a concession speech. I wonder what the sound bites will be from Rush and Pat Robertson...Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

lawrocket 3 #6 November 8, 2006 Nick: While I think you are blowing this somewhat out of proportion, you are on the right track. Unlike Bush, Jr., Nixon inherited a war from Kennedy and Johnson. It will be up to the next President where we will go with it. What I see in this is 1994 all over again. The political hubris of a Legislature and Presidency controlled by the same party running roughshod and uncontrolled. If anyone can recall this time, had Clinton been up for reelection in 1994, he would have been shitcanned. What we see is a shifting of the power back to a balance. I've been saying for a while that the ideal setup is that Congress and POTUS are different parties. Guess why Clinton looked so good? He only looked good his last 5 years. Reagan looked great. Carter lasted one term. The Dems have had ZERO balls since 1994. Hopefully, they'll get some now. My wife is hotter than your wife.
rehmwa 2 #7 November 8, 2006 QuoteI've already heard them saying "the Republicns who lost were not conservatives, so it's a good thing." well, Nick's very eloquent and insane happiness for the unsettling of impotent entertainment media personalities aside , your comment here is a great one. Many of the more moderate republicans were ejected in the close races (they wouldn't have been close if the candidates weren't both moderate in many cases). In one case, an incumbant with high approval and no real difference in platform from his opponent..... If one thinks our country is too far right, then this is bad, as it pulls the left more moderate and further rarifies the right by only retaining the hardcores in office. If one thinks our country is too far left, then this is good, as more moderate democrats are pulled into the fold while the right shifts slightly further right. With the current dynamic, I'd like to see more moderates in office in both parties. Then at least, they can bind up congress with less angst. At least mixing up the moderate seats keep the ideas fresh. Those that are more polarized becoming committee chairs, Speaker of the House, etc is the only worry I have. At least with a mixture of parties, congress can leave the rest of us alone. The last election our politicians thought they got a public "mandate". Let's hope the Dems don't make the same mistake. Instead of pushing partisan agenda 'mandates' maybe they'll show us something new. ... But lets see if you still feel this way in a few years...Don't get me wrong this *may* be a good thing, but the left has failed to stand for anything for 10 years. billvon 3,120 #15 November 8, 2006 >The sad thing is that the Democrats won, not because of >anything they did, nor any great plans they have, but just because >the the Republicans are so f***ed up. True. The democrats weren't a better choice, just the lesser of two bad choices. If they do get the senate, they at least have a chance to start making a difference in the course of the war, runaway spending, record deficits, removal of civil rights etc. I hope they don't blow it. Not true. Gays in the military. Clinton started that push on day one in the WH, he dropped it right after. Health care...Where did that go? Not perception, just the fact. The inability for the dems to have a unified front that they actually stand behind no matter what has been the dems problem for the last 12 years. If it were not for the Iraq issue they STILL would not be in power. The Republicans were voted out, NOT the dems voted in. If the best you can do is not be the other guy....Well you have issues. But lets wait and see if the new speaker of the house does any of the things she claims to be ready to do in the first 100 hours.

billvon 3,120 #23 November 8, 2006 >Don’t believe for a second one has any morale high ground over the other. I assume you mean "moral high ground." Cause right now the democrats have just gotten a massive boost in morale! The democrats have the moral high ground right now mainly because they haven't had the power to get themselves in trouble. Why bribe a powerless democratic senator when you can bribe the GOP chairman of a committee? We'll see what the future holds. I'd like to think the democrats would learn from the republican's mistakes, but that may just be wishful thinking.

Is it any wonder.. when so many of this crop of administration officials got their start in the Nixon Administration????
