The End of Suburbia - 52 minute Documentary on Oil

some other sicknesses of US society that suburbian life style aggrevates

* Obesity - people don't walk anymore
* Destruction of environment
* Social isolation - people don't know many of their neighbors

I didn't watch but think I get the general idea of what is being discussed.

My personal problem with suburbia is loss of land. When I was growing up the area where we live was starting to grow into a very suburban area. My family rented over 1000 acres of farmland within a mile of our home. Now almost all of it has grown up to houses. I see it over and over in many places. A comunity thinks it is great that there are new houses being built then after the land is all built up they wonder were all the farms went.

As skydivers we should be concerned because we need open areas in order to jump. If a housing development is built neer a DZ it won't be long before the new residents complain about the noise of planes and jumpers landing neer there surburban homes. Then before you know it the DZ has to close.

Maybe I'm just rambling.

As long as our population is growing at the rate it is, you can kiss the wide-open spaces good-bye. I've been back to where I grew-up and it's just like you described. All the little towns in 'the heartland' all look the same now. They all have Mickey-'D's', Wally-World, Home Depot and so-on. It's progress, man.

I think, what has always gotten me is, some folks look at tree covered mountains with a clear stream running at the base and admire the beauty and grandeur. Someone else looks at the same mountains and sees a huge resort and ski lifts. Yeah, it sucks.

As there are more people there will be need for more housing. Many people do not want to live in high rises in downtown and would prefer to raise their children in an environment that is somewhat seperated from the unpleasantries of urban life (ie crime, pollution, overcrowding, noise). In suberbia your 8 year old kid can actually walk a few blocks to his freinds house without you worrying about gangs and drugs.

I can appreciate the desire to see farmland but the reality is that there is a need for housing and there is simply no more room in the cities.

WRT people complaining about the dropzone. Pitt Meadows DZ is right near a suburban area, yet to the best of my knowledge there have been no complaints. Usually people only have an argument if some source of noise is put in place after they move in. If the DZ was already there then it is a case of buyer beware.

I hate any municipality without complete sidewalks. Ergo I hate suburbia.

Fair enough. You like living in more urban areas, and that is your right. Some people do, however like living in Suburbia yet people seem to want to prevent that from happenning.

To be more accurate, I loathe the fat bastards that shoehorn themselves into gas-guzzling H2s and F-350s to drive 3/4 of a mile to Sonic, because they're too fat and lazy to put forth the physical effort to go.

I hate sloth, and suburbia promotes sloth.
Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

I see people in urban areas hop on the subway to go 3/4 of a mile because they are too fat and lazy to put forth the effort to walk.

Are gas guzzling H2's and F-350's unique to suburbia? I see a lot of SUV's and even Hummers right downtown. Many people I know in suburbs drive a Honda Accord or Civic.

Any environment can provide incentive for slothlike behavior. Like for example having every kind of store and fast food place within 20 steps of your inner city apartment, or living right near a subway which can take you to the theatre 4 blocks away.

When I lived in the burbs I drove my bike everywhere and walked all the time. I do not like walking downtown as I am frequently harranged by panhandlers (I still do walk however), and I will not risk riding my bike in the city traffic.

Suburbia does not promote sloth, peoples choices promote sloth.

But it's so much easier to generalize and stereotype and hack on lifestyles you don't have just because you don't have any clue about them

all urbanites always do this all the time - it comes from having too much expresso and never wearing comfortable shoes and never actually interacting with children - that and always breathing pollution

(see? easy :P)

Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

And that's the real impact in a nutshell. Now if only we could get the rest of society to appreciate that, it would put it all into perspective.

As for me, I was a suburban kid. And to this day, every time I pass a 4-bedroom Colonial in the suburbs, I get this salmon-like urge to get back to my down-home roots.

Oh, mammy....

(Obligatory :P)

>I hate sloth, and suburbia promotes sloth.

I live in an poorly planned suburb (Vietnam-era housing just outside a military base) but living here actually lets me drive _less._ I'm about 2 miles from the store and 3 miles from work, which lets me bike to both places.

Exactly. Why go to all the effort of seeing the other sides perspective and seeking a constructive resolution/compromise, when we can simply blame "Them" for all the problems that "Those People" create.

me too. I know 4 from just the 2 houses on either side of me.:P I know they exercise because they are taking gym bags to their H2's. Maybe in a couple years I'll introduce myself and find out which gym they use. :P
