I would be far more willing to see more of the administrations families putting themselves in harms way.. you know being REAL leaders... when it comes to counting bodies.>:(

What so many people fail to recognize is this dynamic has been the norm throughout this country's history.

Looking back over the last 200 years, which administrations put themselves and their families in harms way?

Bill,

My point about income taxes is that they should top the list of things we should protest. I think you inferred something quite different.

Good point about it starting small. I blame FDR. ;)

And my point is that we should have started protesting when they were first instituted rather than over a century later. Once you give up rights you never get them back.

Likewise, when they start arresting (and "disappearing") people for sedition, it's too late to try to protest illegal arrests. You lose the rights you do not defend.

The key word is administration. None did so while in office.

Who's been silenced?

Nobody that is will to stand up. But the examples of the attempts are boundless.

Somebody takes on AIDS for example. (This is a disease) They take on a policy around the subject and they are called a gigot or a homaphobe.

Global warning is another issue that the supporter use. If someone has doubts they supports claim those against want to poison the air and polute the earth (hmm, it is the same planet I live on)

and the list goes on and on and on.....

But how do you have greater security with out losing some liberty?

How about changing foreign policy so we don't piss off people in the first place?

Which people? Those that say they are going to kill us because we simply exist?:o[:/]

You are very good at avoiding the point of the discussion if you have nothing constuctive I am noticing

And how did my answer avoid the discussion? By pointing out that the majority of people are poorly informed and the reason why? I believe that I replied directly to both of your topics.

Well:

a) calling someone a "Gigot" isn't much of an insult (unless you hate the Wall Street Journal's editorials)

b) People who combat AIDS are seen as heroes in modern society.

So that makes no sense.

>Global warning is another issue that the supporter use. If someone

Right. But that's not being silenced, that's allowing public debate. "The right to free speech" does not equal "the right to not be disagreed with."

Here's an example of being silenced:

----------
TV GM bans global warming news
BANGOR, Maine, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The general manager of two TV stations in Maine has ordered his news department to stop covering global warming until "Bar Harbor is underwater."

Michael Palmer told the joint news staff of WVII and WFVX in an e-mail that global warming stories are like "'the killer African bee scare' from the 1970s or, more recently, the Y2K scare when everyone's computer was going to self-destruct."
---------

The good news is that, even with such attempts at censorship, readers can simply choose a channel with less of an agenda.

It seems people are confusing the popular "chickenhawk" label (that FDR and Clinton never had to contend with) for the charge popularized by Michael Moore that politicians willing to send troops to do their "dirty work" should be willing to send their own children.

I remember a time when families would instill into their children a sence of patriotism that included serving their country... So even though they were of the Patrician class.....their chilkdren served... kinda like th Royals do in England...its a family expectation.

Those who have the most to gain....should be willing to make the same kind of sacrifices for democracy.. patriotism.. apple pie and the American way.

That's not why they're mad at us. They've told us numerous times why they're mad at us. But to accept that would mean admitting that we may have had a hand in it. It's much easier to blame it on something we can't control, like cultural differences or a misinterpretation of a religion.

Then what was the point?

Being disagreed with, even vehemently, is not the same as being silenced.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

As far as the chichenhawk label goes, are we going to give future presidents blessings for deploying troops only if they have actual combat experience?

Here's a short list of presidents who never saw combat -
Lincoln
FDR
LBJ - he (allegedly) went on a single flight
Nixon
Clinton
Bush

Anyone care to compare combat deaths during each presidency?

Which group (I'm asking for generalizations) has done more to erode those traditional American values?

Neo Cons and those same patrician class like the Bushes who expect to get rich without doing the work of building a country for all the american people.

Sending off american jobs so they can reap huge rewards in salaries in bonuses.. that has taken the american dream away from a large number of americans....
It stems from the self serving.. rather than serving America.

It seems that a large portion of the US citizenry is unaware of what rights they are actually guaranteed. Had they known, there would have been more people aghast at the administration.

the attempt to silence by using the PC retoric. I don't care what side you are on.

Open depbate is not encouraged with one side labeling the other with devicive names. v

Some politions use the IRS but they got that report tied up in Congress and we may never see it.......

Unfortunately, it's not that simple.

They hate us due to the hypocrisy of our foreign policy. The fact that we are Saddam's buddy when it helps us, and his enemy when we get tired of him. The fact that we talk about freedom and democracy, while propping up regimes in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan(and others), neither a fine example of freedom OR democracy. They hate us because we give Israel favorable treatment in foreign policy, especially military aid grant money. The fact that we do business with countries like China, a blatant human right abuser, while continuing to shun Cuba. The fact that we are inviting the Taliban to Texas one month, and destroying them the next (we liked their anti-drug policies).

The people who hate us are not stupid, and the reasons they hate us are not simple. But go ahead and believe that if it helps you to sleep, and because Limbaugh tells you to.
