crwtom 0 #1 October 29, 2006 The verdict of in the Dujail trial of Saddam Hussein is scheduled for Sunday, November 5th - two days before the US midterm elections. Is this a simple coincidence or was this choice of date for the verdict influenced by US interests (either in US or in Iraq) that are hoping for an impact on the US elections? BIGUN 1,486 #2 October 29, 2006 I think most voters minds are already made up and the outcome of the trial wouldn't bear much influence on the election outcome. Now, having said that; I might point you to the Rush Limbaugh thread. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. Cheers, T Well, let's see. Gas prices sure have gone down suddenly. And only a short time before this happened the repair to the Alaskan oil pipeline was supposed to cause an even bigger jump in gas prices. Oh yeah, the stock market is suddenly booming. In fact I just heard Bush saying something about the strong economy being the key to the election. But aren't housing starts way down and US auto makers loosing billions? Hmm, no I think it is only a simple coincidence.
billvon 3,119 #5 October 30, 2006 >How can they schedule a verdict? Does the judge/jury have a fixed >amount of time for deliberation? Yes. It was postponed from Oct 16th about a month ago. Expect a speech from Bush on Nov 6th claiming a victory for the GOP. Does this mean that the administration had a say in the date of the verdict? From a WaPo article: ------------------- The United States has made the prosecution of Hussein -- accused of presiding over the killings of hundreds of thousands of Shiites and Kurds -- one of its priorities since U.S. troops invaded Iraq in 2003. The Bush administration spent hundreds of millions of dollars of a $18.4 billion reconstruction package for Iraq to exhume mass graves and gather forensic evidence. It refurbished courthouses, trained Iraqi judges and provided most of the security for the courts. Americans drafted many of the statutes under which Hussein and his associates are being tried. . . . The U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Regime Crimes Liaison Office run much of the day-to-day arrangements for the trial. Plainclothes security workers, many of them Americans, and Iraqi soldiers guard the turreted, fortress-like former Baath Party headquarters in the American-held Green Zone where the trial is playing out. ----------------- Like Andy Card once said - "From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August." Unfortunately (and, at least in the States, unconstitutionally), ex post facto laws make it through legislation all too often.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. Put him back in, give him some authority - stable Iraq in a week. Bloody massacre? Yes. Stable Iraq? Yes. Ludicrous, I know, but true. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.
