kallend 2,184 #1 October 28, 2006 (AP) WASHINGTON A former Bush administration aide was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison Friday for obstructing justice, the first official in President George W. Bush's White House ordered jailed in a widespread lobbying scandal. David Safavian, formerly chief of staff in the General Services Administration, the government purchasing agency, was convicted in June of lying to investigators about his relationship with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. In appealing for leniency Friday, Safavian told a judge that Abramoff manipulated him and drew him into the scandal. I expect the Dems timed it for just before the election. Edited to add: But Clinton got a BJ.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

lawrocket 3 #10 October 29, 2006 QuoteEdited to add: But Clinton got a BJ. Safavian's relationship with Abramoff was a relationship between consenting adults. You yourself have said that you don't agree with laws that govern conduct between consenting adults Safavian isn't going to prison for any underlying illegal conduct. He's only going to prison for obstruction of justice. His case is similar to Clinton's with the exception that Safavian is going to the can. "Government lawyers said Safavian used his government positions to unfairly advantage Abramoff over three years. They said that when confronted, Safavian lied to protect himself." Now, what was Clinto's position? I'll reqrite it: "Ken Starr said Clinton used his government position to unfairly advantage himself in getting his knob polishd. They said that when confronted, Safavian lied to protect himself." Sweet Jesus! That's Clinton! Apparently the only thing Safavian did wrong was lie about it. The judge chided Safavian for being part of a culture of corruption, but Clinton actually broke federal sexual harrasment laws. And Clinton didn't go to jail for lying about it - UNDER OATH. p.s. Safavian SHOULD go to jail for it. Clinton should have, too. Anyone who does it should. My wife is hotter than your wife.

QuoteBy Peter Baker and Helen Dewar Washington Post Staff Writers Saturday, February 13, 1999; Page A1 The United States Senate acquitted William Jefferson Clinton yesterday on charges that he committed perjury and obstruction of justice to hide sexual indiscretions with a onetime White House intern, permitting the 42nd president to complete the remaining 708 days of his term. NCclimber 0 #21 October 30, 2006 Would someone please explain to me why Bill Clinton paid Paula Jones $850,000.00, paid fines of $90,000.00 & $25,000.00 and agreed to have his law license suspended for five years? Was it because he did nothing wrong?

In my job I frequently make decisions to pay people eventhough we may not legally have to, nor do we assume guilt. Sometimes it is "cheaper" to pay some one and make something go away in a shorter term. Sometimes fighting in court will be costlier. really there are a myriad of reasons as to why he could have done so.

I wouldn't. I might pay someone who didn't deserve the money to get rid of them and because of the damage it might do to the company's image, but I'd fight like hell before giving up a professional license if I was innocent. -
