Not to mention that Fox is misleading at best and lying at worst but, since you think his message is the true word you defend him and, as Coulter has correctly said, you consider him untouchable because he has an illness and we should be nice to him.

Fuck that!!
He threw himself into the political area to put forth his message. And you think because he has an illness he is hands off?? FUCK that too!!

I sincerely wish that everyone against stem cell research has a child who has alzhimers, parkinsons, or becomes paralized from the neck down. I bet we would see a huge change in public sentiment about stem cell research and force politicians to get the fuck out of the way of science and go back to ruining the country through uncontrolled spending.

How do you plan on getting Govt. out of the research decisions when you have so many people calling for increased govt. spending?

-

We could pay for a whole lot of research with the money we've wasted bringing Iraq to the verge of a civil war, and the money we will have to spend caring for wounded veterans.

Right, getting out of Iraq is the panacea to all our problems.:S

How come we haven't solved the "war on poverty" after pumping $5 trillion into it? How come we have so many other problems that weren't solved before the war?

-

1. Do you know that poverty wouldn't be far worse without it? We can be fairly sure that Iraq would be better off without US.

2. "Liberal" administrations don't seem as willing as "conservative" ones to run up record setting debts. This war has been financed by Bush's borrowing.

I just don't see a lot of disdain on your part for willful slackers, and believe me, they are the biggest part of the problem, not the exception.

By willfull slackers, I assume you mean corporations, which often pay no taxes at all, in spite of high profits. I agree, these corporations are the biggest part of the problem, not the poor who actually need the financial assistance.

How is it, my dear friends, that when he decided to do this commercial that he stayed off of his meds in order to magnify the effects of the disease, yet when he's got an acting job, he's as steady as he can possibly be. Sounds pretty phony to me.

In fairness Fox may have just wanted to show what the symptoms of the disease are. When you think about it, medicating yourself regularly with all the side effects (and most sorts of meds do have serious negative side effects) to simply be able to move around without twitching and spasming is not a good way to live your life. In effect he is appealing to look for a cure rather than force someone to medicate as an alternative to being unable to function. I am very right wing but Limbaughs comments were out of line.

Why would he not wish to show people the severity of his condition if it might motivate people to look at stem cell research with an open mind. It is the same with diabetics who do not wish to have to inject themselves with insuline everyday if there is a possible cure. If someone is against stem cell research for thier own reasons, then that is their right but there is no need to mock someone who is trying to appeal towards possibly finding a cure for something that is ruining his life.

I think were all missing the point here. Rush Limbaugh said this insensitive bullshit so he could get his face in the papers and his videos on TV even more. He is one of the most polarizing figures in the US and he only says these things to get attention and airtime on all the 24 hour news channels. Hes making headlines with absurd comments just to stay popular, and its working like a charm.

Bottomline: Rush Limbaugh knows about as much about the truths and science behind diseases and Stem Cell Research as he does about dieting and staying off prescription drugs. He deserves to have a pineapple shoved up his ass.

The links he posted a few pages back might help.

Which link tells how much has been invested in adult stem cell research vs embryonic?

All the links do is affirm the consequent in the proposition, "if embryonic stem cell research is not productive, there will be no (or limited) reseach results".

This is a logical fallacy, because there is another reason that explains why there are only limited returns right now -- artificially restricted funding.

You can kick around the California number all you want, it's simply not enough money and not enough time to keep up with the decade of federal funding that's gone toward adult research. I looked it up, btw, in 2005 it was on the order of six hundred million coming out of the NIH annually toward stem cells, less than 10% going toward embryonic stem cells. According to wikipedia, FWIW.

The California number, on the other hand, is billions put toward an endowment and not directly to actual research, and is currently tied up in litigation (as of July).

The anticipated medical benefits of stem cell research have added a certain amount of emotion and urgency to the debates, which has been exploited by medical researchers, seeking to secure funding and legitimacy for their practice. In other words, the medical community has had a tendency to predict the future benefits of stem cell research without giving sufficient recourse to the inherent complexity that comes with such predictions. This has resulted in stem cell researchers being criticised for falsely raising people's expectations, and for portraying the trajectory of innovation in a very linear fashion.

Such criticism has even come from researchers themselves. For example, in November 2004, Princeton University president and geneticist Shirley Tilghman said, "Some of the public pronouncements in the field of stem-cell research come close to overpromising at best and delusional fantasizing at worst." Similarly, fertility expert and current president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, Lord Winston has warned of a public backlash against stem cell research if it fails to deliver on some of the "hype" surrounding potential treatments.

More than like, true. But whether or not to continue funding adult stem cell research isn't really on the radar. I don't recall hearing much about this field facing cuts to its funding.

The issue is embryonic adult stem cell research. It's benefits (presumably greater than the adult version) is what gets bandied about. Cure Parkinsens(sp?). Repair severed spinal cords.

Pretend I have 2 savings accounts.

The first account, with Adult Bank has $2000 in it earning 3% APY and the other, with Embryonic Bank has $1000 in it earning 5% APY.

Lo and behold, I am making more money off of the Adult account, and it will be that way for quite some time.

But I would still transfer all of my money into the Embryonic account if I could.

That is a really crappy analogy.

BUT giving my tax money to church based... faith based education is WRONG... I do not want the government supporting ANY particular religion.

Then you should be in favor of ending all federal college aid funding that may find its way into a private school, such as Notre Dame, for instance.

Yes.... you got it.... let the people who stand to benefit from an education there and their families... and former alumni... raise the needed funding.

Quite right!

But why let all that bothersome truth get in the way of a good political smear campaign...

So, I hear that Michael Fox has made other ads promoting research, but while he was on his medication. Of course that ad wasn't a political ad aimed at demonizing Republicans, so there was somehow no need to show the affects of the disease.

Don't think that will happen. Liberal political leaders draw the line after high school education. Many liberal interests would oppose such an effort to apply the same principle to colleges. Don't forget that you can take theology/religious type classes even at a public university.

One can advocate a greater separation of church and state than currently exists on its own merits. I just cannot agree that the separation doctrine means what liberals say it means, it does not support your cause. The state of the "separation" 200 years ago is evidence of that.

THe "church" is very good at separating people from their money.. since many people donate 10% or so of their incomes to said "church"... I think they can live within their means.... or beg for more... and I DONT think churches deserve to be tax exempt>:(

If those same people decide to send their children to the parochial school that their church sets up.. fine and dandy... hopefully it will be a well rounded education.... but I do not want to pay for it... period... since I have ZERO input on what particular dogma they are being taught under..... personally ALL dogma needs to stay out of schools.. but that will never happen in church schools.

He could only be more of a pig if he grew a cute little corkscrew tail.

About 12 or so years ago, when she was just 13 years old, that asshole called Chelsea Clinton "the White House dog", and held up her picture. I saw this on my TV, after coming home from work late one night.

The way I see it, Bill & Hillary might be fair game, but anybody who would say a thing like that about a 13 year old girl is a complete shit.

I wouldn't piss on Limbaugh if he was on fire.
