Roche Jr. Times Staff Writer October 22, 2006 A company headed by President Bush's brother and partly owned by his parents is benefiting from Republican connections and federal dollars targeted for economically disadvantaged students under the No Child Left Behind Act. With investments from his parents, George H.W. and Barbara Bush, and other backers, Neil Bush's company, Ignite! Learning, has placed its products in 40 U.S. school districts and now plans to market internationally. At least 13 U.S. school districts have used federal funds available through the president's signature education reform, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, to buy Ignite's portable learning centers at $3,800 apiece. Most of Ignite's business has been obtained through sole-source contracts without competitive bidding. Neil Bush has been directly involved in marketing the product. In addition to federal or state funds, foundations and corporations have helped buy Ignite products. The Washington Times Foundation, backed by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, head of the South Korea-based Unification Church, has peppered classrooms throughout Virginia with Ignite's [product] under a $1-million grant. Oil companies and Middle East interests with long political ties to the Bush family have made similar bequests. Aramco Services Co., an arm of the Saudi-owned oil company, has donated [Ignite's product] to schools, as have Apache Corp., BP and Shell Oil Co. Gawain 0 #5 October 24, 2006 Well, I guess the family should thank Sen. Kennedy, since he was the primary author of the bill. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! freethefly 6 #8 October 24, 2006 QuoteAnd Clinton got a hummer! And Bush: Lied about providing AIDS funding (He slashed funds before the ink dried on the bill). Failed to catch Bin Laden (He brushed it off to start an illegal war in Iraq). Started a war under false pretense. Failed the environment. Destroyed medicare. Allowed N.Korea to advance their nuclear ambition. Allowed Iran to advance their nuclear ambition. Against and halted much of the stem cell research on religious grounds. Virtually no foreign policy. Huge deficit, $230billion surplus to a $500billion+ deficit. Destroyed any good reputation the U.S. had. Failed in Afghanistan, the Taliban is back and heroin production is at an all time high. Cut taxes three times that placed more burden on the poor while reducing any burden on the rich. Gave no-bid contracts to corporations connected to his administration. Caused an all time boom in terrorist recruitment. And this is only a small list of his failure as a "leader". Near any corporation would had shitcan this fuckup of a president a long time ago. Given the failures of the worst president in history, I'd much rather have a president who got a hummer than one who has caused so much debt, suffering and destruction any day."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Quote The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) was signed into law on January 8, 2002; it is the current name for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) passed in 1965. The law comprises nine titles and over 50 different programs, the largest of which is known as Title I. Title I supports school districts educating low-income students through federal funds and programs, and includes many opportunities for parent and community involvement.
