JackC 0 #3 October 24, 2006 Until the lack of resources directly affects them, I doubt anything will happen. People just aren't motivated to curb their consumerism unless they have the proverbial gun to their head. An H5N1 pandemic would probably sort the problem out though. Drastic though it is. BillyVance 35 #5 October 24, 2006 QuoteQuoteA WWF study says Since when are we giving credence to a study performed by a bunch of meathead wrestlers? That's World Wildlife Fund to you, sir. They sued the World Wrestling Federation because of the confusion over the matching acronyms, and also because the Wildlife Fund was established first. That led the wrestling company to change to WWE, E for Entertainment. They sold a bunch of T-shirts with the slogan "Get the "F" out!" Okay, back to the thread topic..."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
NCclimber 0 #6 October 24, 2006 This is a tricky one. China and India are two of the fastest growing economies on the planet. Both are on paths to becoming major economic forces. Environmental issues that might impact economic progress are not really up for discussion. Even if the US took measures to dramatically cut back on our "use" of the planet, the overall benefit would be negligible without co-operation from China and India. Instead, it would just hurt us economically.
shropshire 0 #7 October 24, 2006 Would the economic hurt be worth it so that you can breath? The stopping breathing part could seriously limit future economic growth too. (.)Y(.) America has less than 5% of the worlds population, 30% of the worlds economy and produces 24% of the worlds CO2, and you want Guatemala to curb their CO2 emmisions first? Why can't someone just start off unilaterally? Why do people insist that they shouldn't bother to do anything to solve the problem because the other fella isn't doing anything. It's stupid. A journey of a thousand miles starts with one small step. It's your turn. You can start by leaving the car parked in the driveway, and doing everything with a bicycle, or on foot. Are you game? I don't own a car and I already walk everywhere, or use a bicycle, or a bus, or a train or a taxi (when necessary).... it is possible to survive without a car of your own. You will still rely on your car for the rest of the year won't you? You don't need to stop going on holiday anyway, you just need to think a little more about where you go on holiday and how you are getting there. Try taking a train or coach to your destination instead of driving or flying. Take a holiday close to home rather than abroad. AND reduce your dependence on the use of your car throughout the year too if you cannot get rid of it altogether. That's a start.
