Wall Street Journal OPED Gets It Right (IMO)

Recommended Posts

I've been seeing some of that. People being intolerant of intolerance. One of the things people often forget is that the first amendment also grants freedom of speech to people who don't agree with you.

I think one of the reasons that people get so upset about people speaking out against personal choice, whether it's the choice to own a gun or the choice to have or not have an abortion, is that they forget that the USA is supposed to be a nation of freedom, and with freedom comes the responsibility for making your own choices, whether they're good or bad.

I think people would be much more tolerant of each other if we stopped trying to outlaw things we don't agree with. The pro-gun people would be much more likely to listen to anti-gun people if the anti-gun people weren't putting the pro-gun people on the defensive by actively trying to take away the ability to own guns. People don't listen when they're threatened, when they're pushed. They push back. And nothing productive takes place.

I have no problem with someone explaining to me why I shouldn't make a certain decision. I'll probably sit down and listen. However, if you try to take away my ability to make the decision at all, I'll probably be pretty ticked off and less likely to actually want to listen to you.

If we all stopped trying to outlaw the things we don't like, we'd probably get along a lot better, because we could agree to disagree without the threat of the other party trying to legislate their point of view.

Nice post, Nightingale.

Peggy Noonan's article was good, too. however, I don't see this "lack of civility" issue being exclusively the problem of liberals. It's on both sides.

One nice thing about this Forum is the enforced policy regarding personal attacks. Other sites I've visited have a no holds barred approach. Unmoderated forums tend to bring out the worst in people.

And then there are the pundits on TV. Reasoned debate? Fuggedaboudit. It's about conflict. Let's see some bared teeth.

Politics seem to be particularly nasty. Ten or fifteen years ago, we'd hear about the few mudslinging campaigns. Now, they're all nasty.

It's as if we, as a society, are stuck in the eighth grade.

as long as they are all slinging and counterslinging, at least they aren't raising taxes, creating wasteful social programs, starting any new wars, molesting local area employees, stealing my property, adding goofy 'theme' months to the calendar, etc.......

keep 'em busy with busy work and they do less harm

A very good Op-Ed, and a good post from Nightingale too.

Though, to Nightingale, aren't you a law student, so wouldn't you really like to have more laws...kinda a job security thing? :P
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

LOL. Nope. I'm a libertarian. I'm all for fewer laws and fewer taxes.

I'm (hopefully) going into criminal law, so I'm not worried about job security.

Ahem. Wouldn't more laws criminalizing stuff be even better for you?. I smell hypocrisy.:P

Nah. The courts are over-crowded as it is. I'd like to see us streamline our laws a bit and stop putting potheads and prostitutes in jail. Might not be great for my job security, but better for the world in general.
