This action became necessary following practices by local officials in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. H.R. 5013, the “Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act,” passed the House with a broad bi-partisan margin of 322-99. The Senate version of the bill passed by 84-16.Source Funny how this news story doesn't appear in a single place in any mainstream media...
Scoop 0 #2 October 11, 2006 I think I approve of this. Let me get it right, too many negatives in one setance... if there is a state of emergancy no-one will have the right to take weapons away from the members of public (who had a right to own them anyway). This seems good but how would you store your weapons securely if, for example, a hurricane or flood had destroyed your home? Thats the only concern
wmw999 2,602 #3 October 11, 2006 If, however, on entering a home that appears to be abandoned, the authorities might need the right to remove weapons. Because, after all, if the house appears to the authorities to be abandoned, what will it look like to predators? Other than that, it sounds reasonable to me. Wait until you catch someone fucking up with a gun, and then lock it up. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

In addition, they should have the authority to outlaw weapons at refugee centers, food distribution areas, train stations etc (similar to how weapons are currently prohibited in airports.) With such caveats it's a reasonable law.
