N. Korea Could Test Nuke This Weekend

Recommended Posts

Now reported as a magnitude 3.6 tremor.

[:/]

It would be nice to believe that it could be due to just the blast that sets off the nuc part of the bomb (hoping the nuclear part may have not worked), but that is really wishful thinking.

Apparently, the Chinese were given a 20 minute warning, and the seismic tremor is at the time of the warning. The NK have said that there was no nuclear radiation leak. I am not at all sure what that really means, but apparently, they've tested it, it worked, and it's been contained.

Lots of confusion, and it's going to be a while before we get 100% confirmation.

Underground testing of nuclear weapons was common. Many tests have been done in Nevada by Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, associated with the University of Berkley.

Thanks, Sundevil...I know what underground means, and am aware of the Nevada testing. Just not sure what the no leaks part means. How would they know? And how would we know if they were telling the truth?

My bad, I wrote a terribly constructed sentence there...sorry.

Sorry, I guess it is not so hard to believe that they were able to do an underground test without any leaking of radiation above ground, for now.

I sure hope the geology of their site is as good for such awful purposes as the Nevada site is. They certainly don't have as big a country to find such an appropriate site. Leaking may also be a longer term problem, for ground water, etc.

I suppose that also applies to other countries that have tested underground (Pakistan, etc.), they have to choose the best site within their small boundaries.

How do you know your own government tells you the truth? (Hint: think WMDs).

THanks for the clarification.

They now are reporting that it is a 4.2 tremor rather than a 3.6. Not surprising that they upgraded - preliminary seismic data almost always does get revised.

How big was the bomb, does anyone know?

What do you suggest would have been more successful?

I think we should allow him to win American Idol, or Dancing with the Stars, or get him a singing part in a musical, something...that is really what he Il wants. :D[:/]

I don't know, I'm not a career diplomat, maybe they should have been more diplomatic instead of imposing sanctions so readily, maybe Bush should not have called them an "axis of evil", it is hard to negotiate with someone when you are insulting them.
What I do know is that the current US adminstration failed to prevent NK going nuclear, they should have done better, that is their job, they were elected on a security ticket, this seriously underminds our security, NK supplies weapons to terrorists and now they have nukes :(.
