Gravitymaster 0 #1 October 6, 2006 North Korea 'could test bomb this weekend' (Filed: 06/10/2006) North Korea may carry out a nuclear test as early as this weekend, according to a senior Japanese diplomat. Shotaro Yachi, the Japanese deputy foreign minister, made the claim after talks with US security officials in Washington. Japan has said that it is stepping-up monitoring of its neighbour as a contingency, though it has no solid information that a test is imminent. On Tuesday the Stalinist state said it was preparing to trial a nuclear device, in an apparent attempt to blackmail America into dropping economic sanctions. Some analysts have suggested that a test could come as early as Sunday, the anniversary of Kim Jong Il's appointment as head of the Korean Workers' Party in 1997. Mr Yachi said: "Based on the development so far, it would be best to view that a test is possible this weekend." Japan has two intelligence-gathering satellites and launched a third in September that can monitor the North's nuclear weapons and missile programs. On Wedneday the US detected activity in North Korea indicating possible preparations for an underground nuclear test. Spy satellites have picked up unusual movement of vehicles at potential test sites. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What should the US response be if they test the nuke? Actually, thinking about it... Filling a couple of B-2 bomb-bays with chicken McNuggets and dropping them on Pyongyang would send a hell of a message. Mike. billvon 3,116 #11 October 6, 2006 >we could always drop Cluster-McNuggets on their cities That's inhumane. Kids find them, think they're food, play with them, and end up with greasy, filty fingers. There are kids all over the world missing clean fingers because of cluster mcnuggets. (Not to mention elevated triglycerides.)

We Cluster-McNugget their population centres (Population Centres sound much nicer than Bamboo shacks or caves)... Then wreck their economy by charging exhorbitant prices for those little plastic tubs of sauce and serviettes and moist wipes (Which knowing McDonalds are probably made in North Korea anyway). It's exactly the sort of win-win situation that made western empires great! One where the "Client-State" pays US money for stuff that THEY actually produce. Michele 1 #17 October 7, 2006 Per this morning's news, a handful of North Korean soldiers crossed the dmz and started firing on south Korean soldiers. I don't know if this is common (I've heard such incursions are somewhat frequent) or not, but I do know it's provocative... This weekend might get interesting... I'm sort of curious about where and how they intend to "test" their bomb and wouldn't rule out launching it on Seoul. It's easy to talk about bombing or nuking the NK's, but what the Koreans understand better than us is that another war between them would be like NYC going to war with New Jersey. They are that close together, with major populated cities within artillery range of the DMZ. So let's not be in too much of a hurry to offer up massive Korean casualties on both sides of the fence as a solution. Also, for historic perspective, Harry Truman was smart enough not to let Korea turn into a 3rd World War when MacArthur wanted to invade China and use nukes. But as our current president chooses to learn nothing at all from history, the hot button may well be his first choice. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity ! miked10270 0 #19 October 7, 2006 QuoteAlso, for historic perspective, Harry Truman was smart enough not to let Korea turn into a 3rd World War when MacArthur wanted to invade China and use nukes. Weren't the two seperate? I know that MacArthur was ordered to stop at the Yalu River, but The PRC intervened as he was approaching anyway. I understood that the motivation for the fledgling PRC was that they were afraid of a pro-Chinese-Nationalist state on their border, particularly on the "traditional" invasion route into China and its economic centre, as so recently demonstrated by the Japanese. Hence their energetic support for the elder Kim while Stalin was telling him to run! Then, during the Chinese /DPRK drive south and their mass attacks, MacArthur wanted control of Nukes to annihilate the Chinese & DPRK columns and this is what was refused by Truman, but as much on tactical grounds as political ones. Not only was it impossible to identify a target which would still be present when the attack was mounted, but the appearance of the MiG-15 had rendered the B-29 obsolete and not very likely to successfully deliver a nuke. Whoops .. those nukes might still come in handy after all. Gotta wonder how Nth Korea could do anything without having the protection of China's masses. In the cold war novel " The Blue Ants " ( can't remember the author) the Chinese masses over-run the world. Nothing can stop them. 10% of their massive army is bigger than many countries armies combined. They could afford to lose half their army cause by then no enemy would exist. ... at least that's how it went in the book. Still a bit glad those Chinamen are in general peaceful farmers ..or at least used to be.
Michele 1 #23 October 9, 2006 FOX news reporting now that North Korea has tested it's first nuclear bomb, but cautioning that these reports are unconfirmed as of now. Apparently, South Korea is calling an emergency meeting for security, and this is a very fluid situation now. AP is also reporting this, and Japan is getting some sort of meeting together, as well. It's the 9th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's take over, too. It will get interesting if true... Michele 1 #25 October 9, 2006 no independent confirmation yet, not even with the USGS who monitors earthmovements and can see a nuclear signature (or so I've been told...not sure how they'd tell, but that's all right... Also, a new secretary general (from SOuth Korea, if I'm understanding things correctly) will be elected tomorrow...or today, on that side of the globe. Co-incidence? I think not. I wonder what China will/can do? Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
