Guest #1 October 2, 2006 The benefits of globalization appear to be bogus. What it has done, thanks to the Internet, is allow businesses to export high-paying jobs from the USA to Third-World countries. We all know that, but here is a very good treatment of the problem. From the article: "During the past five years (January 01 – January 06), the information sector of the US economy lost 644,000 jobs, or 17.4 per cent of its work force. Computer systems design and related work lost 105,000 jobs, or 8.5 per cent of its work force. Clearly, jobs offshoring is not creating jobs in computers and information technology." mh"The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." ChasingBlueSky 0 #2 October 2, 2006 Losing jobs to other countries has long been an issue in this country....it's just took time to make it to IT. I'm not defending sending them away since I have been on the losing side of the move a few times :/_________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Gawain 0 #3 October 2, 2006 QuoteThe benefits of globalization appear to be bogus. Not if you ask India or China. One benefit we won't see for a while is the force of change and evolution it will force the US into over time. It's like the textile industry. It's pretty much gone in the US now. Steel, it was all but gone, but has restabalized in the past 5-6 years. Manufacturing, depends on the goods. More auto manufacturers make their cars here in the US. The IT sector is going to change with it. Certain jobs were destined to become "a-dime-a-dozen", and the industry perpetuated it. CCNA's used to be big deal. Nortel Certifications too. IT can be so segmented that I think the article you note requires a bit more scrutiny. The author doesn't note about what qualifies as "computer engineer" or "information sector", it's a pretty broad brush without saying what it really means. The reductions being cited are in the face of a still-growing segment, one which is in need of another correction, IMO.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
