I can't help but wonder why those, who are the most outraged about someone sending dirty messages to minors (who were savy enough to land a spot in the Congressional Page program) are the same people who think it's okay for minors to get abortions without parental notification. I'd say both involve sexual abuse of a child...wouldn't you? On the notification issue - I disagree. If the child is of an age where the parents still hold responsibility for that child, the parents should be informed, just as they would be if the child were hospitalized or arrested.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. It makes it even more deplorable if the reason it was allowed to continue was because revealing it at the right time would give a political advantage to either party. Didn't take too long, though. http://www.pattywetterling.com/media/crimes.php
Andy9o8 2 #234 October 4, 2006 Here's an apt (and even-handed) commentary I read in a column today: Quote The worst thing about this scandal is that it's the second time our politicians have been caught using the page program as a jailbait dating service. Members of Congress should register with the local sheriff's department when they move and be prohibited from living within 500 yards of a school or day care center. Well....they're very different issues. One involves sexual abuse of a child. The other involves reproductive rights. But they both involve how we, as a society, treat our children. On the one hand, these pages are poor defenseless children, and on the other, those girls are mature enough to make a major decision on their own. I'm still waiting to see analysis on the IM's, as well... hopefully they weren't sent to Mr. Ross from a Kinko's in Abilene... There's also the editorial quote, below: "We have a lot more questions about this whole affair. The timing of the revelations, as we noted, couldn't be more propitious for the Democrats. Turns out both the Democrats and several newspapers seem to have known about Foley's problem as far back as November, according to research by several enterprising blogs" If the quote above turns out to be true, maybe the DEMS should be the ones facing criminal investigation...Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. juanesky 0 #240 October 4, 2006 What I pick up from that perspective it that teenagers have never been dificult. It's all the parents fault. The parents never teach teenagers about sex, and that earns them the right to become promiscious and start reproducing like rabbits say, at age 15. We should include drugs into the mix as well as alcohol. Shouldn't we Amazon?"According to some of the conservatives here, it sounds like it's fine to beat your wide - as long as she had it coming." -Billvon

We should include drugs into the mix as well as alcohol. Shouldn't we Amazon? I guess if you as a parent give up.. or WILL not talk to them.. OR only give them the idea that sex is dirty and sinful.... I know PLENTY of parents that CAN NOT talk to their own kids about sex.... they are embarrassed....to talk about sex... that is totally screwed up and reflects a very disfunctional puritanical system. Personally I would rather teach a child from an early age IN YOUR family home... truthful information about their bodies.. and their sexuality and you would have far less need to have children who need abortions... perhaps in your world.. you have lived thru that scenario...In my world I lived thru the one I described... with NO ill effects. If you are too busy to raise your children....If you are to ashamed to talk to your children about a wonderful part of their lives.... Then you will indeed live in what the chinese call...."interesting times"

juanesky 0 #243 October 4, 2006 What I perceive is that you had a very "interesting" teenage years. Are you a parent? In my case my offspring (one only) is 6 years old, and we are very open. Not the teenage years yet, but already has the idea about how children are "made". Educating a child is not as cut and dry as you try to make it."According to some of the conservatives here, it sounds like it's fine to beat your wide - as long as she had it coming." -Billvon
