They had that story on Nightline last night. Two of his fellow drivers were executed/shot by the insurgents on the spot... and then typically a crowd gathered around them as they molested their corpses.. It was caught on tape on the Predator. Personally I think a hellfire missle into the crowd around the bodies doing what they were doing would be a good way to discourage further atrocities like that.

From what i saw on CNN International this morning when they reported this story, the military concluded that the escorts did the correct thing when reacting to an ambush. Specifically, they got all functioning vehicles out of the kill box as quickly as possible and then attempted to counterattack. It sounds bad to leave people behind, even temporarily, but you aren't helping out your buddies by standing in the kill box next to them waiting to be the next one to get shot. Ambushes are generally well)planned by the attackers, so remaining where they want you to (in the kill box) just plays right into their plan.

I can't watch streaming video from school, but it is the correct thing to get out of the kill zone, not make an Alamo stand when it is not necessary. Then produce a counter attack.

On a similar note. One thing I appreciated about Special Forces as oppose to other elite units like Rangers & Marines. This "leave no man behind" stuff was not taken to the illogical extreme. Meaning, while every effort would be taken to extract the wounded and trapped, there would not be the sacrifice of life to extract dead bodies. Why the difference? It is my opinion that SF guys are typically, more experienced, older and have the bigger picture in mind. "We will not leave you behind" is a motivation young, lesser experienced operators need. Also SF were taught to E&E on their own.

You clearly have never laid an ambush. The attackers WANT you to stay in the killing zone. Everyone who can get out should get out. Then they can think about flanking or a counter attack.

I didn't see anything that said the UAV was a Predator. There are hundreds of UAVs currently in use that have no weapons of any kind and the UAV in this case was most likely one of those.

I can't discuss my SOP's but THAT video is FUCKED up. You don't leave live people on the X. HOWEVER.........convoy escort is a specific skill. It takes a close knit highly trained team to do it well. Those poor Army guys probably had something next to ZERO training in how to deal with the situation. Yet.......they were given the job anyway. Lack of training and or common sense gets more people killed over here than you can believe. Like a vid I saw recently of a soldier getting OUT of a MINE HARDENED vehicle to look at and stand next to a suspected IED. He didn't have to wait long to confirm it was an IED. The stupididty makes me crazy!
