My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
OK..............had to come bak for an edit. What we SHOULD have done is kept up the funding and INCREASED the amount of support to certain groups. Like Massood. Played a little bit of puppetmaster to put him in power. THAT's what we SHOULD have done. Of course..........then all the liberal people in SC today would be citing that as an example of how America supports evil people. 
But.........I think it would have been better than abandoning them. This is ALL easy to say in hindsight though. Back then........Afghanistan was a skirmish in the hot side of the cold war. It didn't matter then. The BIG picture was that we had the USSR on the ropes and we weren't quite so worried about a little country that meant very little on the world scene. If there is a lesson to take from this..........It's that maybe our Strategic planning should be better.

Who really knows..........but I have read that all materials and money were given to the Pakistani ISI (Somewhat the CIA counter part) and it was delivered by them to Afghanistan. Of course........that meant the ISI got to PICK who they wanted to support.
