Art dangerous to Fifth Graders?

However, this raises an important issue, one that several posters here miss by their off-the-cuff dismissal of these parents as "repressed" and "from Texas" etc. etc. I'm not at all surprised that there has been overtones of the parents being uptight religious folk who have a problem w/ the pleasures of the body as stated in a post or two. A little prejudicial posting, for sure. We don't know why the parents were so upset, do we. No we don't, but as usual, some people jump to conculusions about repression and uptight-ness, and the sex is bad mentality, etc.

Once again ...IT'S TEXAS! Book banning, book burning, right wing, bible thumping, jesus loving TEXAS! Prejudicial? Perhaps, but if a wager were proposed, it's where the smart money goes.

The rest of the nation that might actually value learning and (gasp!) thinking have a hard time getting good textbooks because they have to be passed by the lowest common denominator of ...TEXAS.

Sweetie, don't use the tar brush too liberally. Even if it's on people you disagree with. It puts them into categories that you judge them by, without benefit of letting them contribute on an individual basis to your judgment.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Right, but that's mainly because it's the second-largest state in the US (and the largest mostly-conservative state.) If some silly left-wing law is passed, the smart money is on California.

When talking about a culture, one must refer to the characteristics of the culture, not each individual in it. Put another way, what is statistically true for a given population is not necessarily true for any individual within that population. Another way to say it might be:

Blindly? My comments were based on a wealth of news reports and law suits on the actions of the Texas school board.

I'm curious as to your definition of "extremely left winged school". They certainly aren't reading left wing text books in the state of Texas where the school board banned a text book because it had pictures of a woman in a business suit, carrying a briefcase because it was contrary to "the traditional conservative values of the state of Texas".

If find it amusing that so many people love to wrap themselves in the First Amendment (Free Speech, Public redress of grievances, etc.) when it comes to causes they support, but resort to name calling and dishonest stereotypes when it comes to causes/changes they dislike.

First Amendment - it's for everybody. ;)

well....in my mind "loquacious" means "talking to hear your head rattle." So I was exemplifying that, being silly, like usual. ==B-D

ah THAT "l" word... gotcha... no doc i was quoting from one of the greatest movies of the late '80s. i was not just being verbose for the sake of hearing my dulcet tones, although I have been known to wax eloquent for no other reason than because I think i have something important to say when, in fact, i am quite mistaken. :D :P
