Last night I was told this story by a vicar who has a friend who is a Priest in New York. One day a well known crime figure came into the church and asked him to give his dead brother a Christian burial. He also told him that if during the cermony he described his brother as a Saint he would give him $200,000 towards the steeple fund. He also told him that if he didn't he would make his life unpleasent and that he had the power to do that. Now the Priest new of the dead brother who had also been involved in organised crime, he needed the money but it would mean lying. He spend couple of sleepless night worrying. On the day of the funeral by the grave all the gangsters were gathered in their black suits and long coats. The priest looked around took a breath and said, " We all know the man in the coffin was a lyer, cheat, bully, adulterer, drug dealer and a thief....." here was stunned silence and then the Priest pointed to the dead mans relative and said "But compared to his brother this man was a Saint!"When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy.
