Yep I bet there aren't any in Kosovo huh?

There are many, and since he's there, I will trust Mark's statement that all Kosovian muslims are angry. It also seems that all US armed forces personel serving there seems pretty bitter and angry at muslims. That's a great mix for good times to come.

Last night, I had wonderful lamb skewers from a Chinese Muslim restaurant. As luck had it, not only were the skewers delicious, but the muslims inside the restaurant restrained themselves from lynching me.:)

Why would they lynch you? Aren't you FRENCH? :D

Only when it's convenient, and since the appeasement policy has, it seems, failed, I have no reason not to use that blue passport of mine...:P

Are all muslims violent brainwashed twits? Obviously no.
Are all Americans materialistic pricks that only care about oil regardless of what it costs the rest of the world? Again, obviously no.

However, it is the people that fit into the above groups that create conflict. Inside America we are shown angry, murderous, hate driven muslims who want nothing more than to kill every Israeli and American on earth. Outside the U.S., they see fat americans chowing down on a Big Mac driving their 12 ft tall SUVs who are apathetic to the rest of the world's problems, especially the ones we have a hand in. Obviously, this is a very narrow view of things. And, anyone who argues solely based on those groups is a fool who can't see the forest for the trees.

I do not pretend to be perfect. On many occasions my emotions get the better of me and my view narrows. I speak of "them" as a whole, compromised of savages. I feel ashamed afterwards for being no better than the people I hope some day will grow emotionally and intellectually enough to see the world for what it is.

When all we do is draw battle lines of our differences, we shall always be fighting a deadly war of ignorance.

Democrat, Republican, Muslim, Jew, Human... The one thing I hope everyone in this thread can agree upon is that we all hope for an end to the violence on both sides. No matter who you think is correct or justified, wouldn't it be more productive to work together on solving the issues in a calm and constructive manner, than throwing veiled insults around?

I believe EVERYONE can agree that the world as a whole has a very large problem right now that can not be ignored or allowed to continue as it is. I only hope that we all wake up enough and work together, instead of fighting against eachother, before it is too late.

Oh, is the "religion of peace" rioting again ? I'm sorry, how strange.... Pope Benny may be a tough old cuss, but I'm glad he's called a spade a spade where the Muslims are concerned. And of course they're proving him wrong by attacking Christian churches.

Anybody up for nuking Mecca yet ???

In March '04, two Albanian boys drowned, supposedly after being chased into a river by Serb youths. There were several days of rioting by the Muslims, with 20+ churches being burnt. 24 people were killed and over 900 injured.

Mike, you know better than most that the balkans is still today a powder keg. For many historical, religious, geographical and political issues. Hell, 92 years ago, some fat dude was assasinated in Sarajevo, and next thing you know there are over 20 Million casualties...
There has been, in the passed few years, a "coup" by the muslim extremists over their religion, where portions (mostly the poors) of the muslim population is being encouraged to react physically to any issue. This serves a political purpose for these extremists. Masses tend to act like sheep. And even though we use different means, we do act like sheep as well in the US, Western Europe, Oz, etc... We're just lucky to have bigger, better weapons than they do.

Agreed - things are usually at a simmer, just waiting for an event to touch it off.

While I by no means think that all Muslims act in this way (certainly most of the ones that I've met over here in Kosovo are pretty level-headed), there's always the firebrands that jump in the middle of the shit at a moment's notice.

I realize that "if it bleeds, it leads"... but where are the MODERATE muslims decrying the attacks? Why is it that you NEVER see a Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah or a Ahmad Khatami denouncing the violence and urging understanding and restraint?

I suspect that unfortunately, to the world press (regardless where it stands on the issue), someone calling for calm is not newsworthy. People tend to turn on their TVs to see misery and chaos, not reason and zen preaching.
I, for one, turn my TV on to watch Football (Soccer), so that's pretty chaotic...

In Arab psychology, everything is black and white, so there really is no other reaction for them to have besides screaming with rage and blowing things (and people) to smithereens any time someone says something even slighty critical (or even questioning) about their so-called "religion" (death cult is what I've called it here).

Serious question, do you think it is the Koran, the 'leadership' of Islam or the current society in the middle east that you blame for these types of actions?

Serious answer: All of the above, with the possible exception of the koran. It is after all nothing but words on a page.

It's the leadership that profits from the ignorance of the people and misdirects their ire towards us, away from where it really belongs - in their own lives.

Some Arab thinkers (Dr Wafa Sultan comes immediately to mind, though I have read others) are calling for reform of Middle Eastern society, based in part on this observation.

They're got the worst of everything: totally messed-up politics, an abysmal, dying culture, and a death cult for a religion, thanks to the selective and hypocritical interpretation of their holy book.

Illiteracy plays a role as well, and this is encouraged by the religious leaders because it suits their simple purpose - it keeps them in charge.

Western values (like democracy) and technology are denounced as "Un-islamic", and yet the mullahs will use technology when it fits their aims (like loudspeakers on top of minarets, or hijacking airliners and flying them into buildings). If technology is "Un-islamic", why use it? Simple answer - they're hypocrites.

edit to add: I think I've remarked on this before, but I will repeat it.

One thing I actually respect about islam is the anti-adolatry stance that is a big part of it. There are no pictures of the prophet allowed; because islam isn't about him (he's the messenger, not the message).

This is in stark contrast to Christianity which has icons of just about everyone, including Christ himself. I've always been uncomfortable with that, especially in light of the commandment prohibiting the worship of graven images.

Thats pretty ironic coming from someone who selectivly looks at the entire religion and calls it a 'death cult' based on the actions of those who take action on said interpretation of selected verses.

I believe EVERYONE can agree that the world as a whole has a very large problem right now that can not be ignored or allowed to continue as it is. I only hope that we all wake up enough and work together, instead of fighting against eachother, before it is too late.

The world needs to realize that a very large fraction of the Muslim population, including their leaders, are NOT rational people. That is the major problem, IMO.

Isn't it strange, for such a peaceful religion, their symbology includes alot of swords?

The most popular religion in these parts uses an instrument of torture and execution as its symbol. Wierd, isn't it?

"well, he deserved it for driving his SUV through the McDonald's drive through"

Based on your examples, which extremists appear 'more' extreme.

As there are 1,500,000,000(1,5 billion) Muslims in the world clearly its not true, if it were you really would have a problem.
