Should U.S legalize Marijuana??

Recommended Posts

>Such as?

Legalizing it, taxing it and using the money to treat people with dependency problems. Would it work better than trying to stop people from using it at all, and failing? (which is what we're doing now.) I don't know - but I think there's a good chance it would.

I think only reason why govn't are not legalizing it, is because, cops cant tell if you are DUI or not, let's say it has become legal one day. People will smoke and drive just like alchohol, and they will cause accident. when they drug test you you can always tell the judge that "hey I smoked 2 days ago and that's why it came out positive", they will never be able to tell wheather you were high at the time of accident or not. THC stays in your system for such a long peroid of time that, they can't tell weather, you smoked 1 hour ago or week ago.But with alchohol you piss and breathe away in an hour or so.
For the Red eye use the eye drops, and if you smoke enough like I used to about 3 g a day, then being high is so normal that you'll be able to talk to cop, politician, teacher, work boss anyone and they will just think that you are bit slow than other.

It varies from state to state. Some states (ie Oregon) are much more forgiving.

I do agree (and scholarly studies show) that marijuana is the stepping block to addiction and harder drugs. Not to imply that everyone who uses it will go on to heavier drugs, but it is called the "gateway drug" for a reason.

I think the whole point is that using marijuana changes the chemistry in your brain, during and after use. You become impaired. Thinking and reaction times are distorted.

I previously worked at an inpatient hospital and we had a few cases of people who used marijuana heavily over a few years and developed mood disorders, and in some people psychotic disorders. I am not talking about intoxication psychosis,..I am talking about fucking-up-your-brain permanently psychosis. And these were the same people who in their younger years rendered marijuana "harmless". The diagnosis: Psychotic disorder due to prolonged marijuana use. Paranoia and magical thinking were key features. These were in people who had clean urinalysis, who had not smoked in months, but had a long history of heavy use. Now guess who is picking up their social security disability bill?? Now tell me it is only "their" problem if they are addicted to drugs!

Reference me one study, scholarly article or peer reviewed journal that supports this statement, and I'll give you credit. I assume you are just making an opinionated statement not backed by any real facts. There are indeed several studies that DO identify marijuana as a gateway drug. I have never, in all my studies and experience in this field, have come across any research OR clients that back up your statement. Only thing that comes close are pre-teens who sniff gas and glue, by then most are already smoking marijuana.

Interesting.

I'll have to research...

When I was a sophomore at UF I took a family health class that included a lengthy discussion on drugs and their short-term/long-term effects. The one class makes me no expert. Marijuana, however, was ranked "least" under both short-term and long-term effects; even less than alcohol. I, too, was a little skeptical of that learning, though I know UF is a good school, and did some research. At the time (sophomore year for me was about 6 years ago) I found coinciding evidence. Since then I've been satisfied with that.

What you say sounds quite extreme. But I don't doubt you saw what you saw.

Granted we had WAY more psychosis/mood problems with cocaine and meth users. I don't mean to imply that it is frequent with marijuana,..but it is very much possible. And as stated, we did have a few cases of that. All mental illness and medical causes of psychosis were ruled out, with chronic cannabis use being main factor of psychosis.

(my post is off subject, but I feel very important)
The reason the Govt isn't legalizing it is because most people do not want it around. That's the real truth. Everybody wanted alcohol back during Prohibition and it became too great. Back then the Govt had programs against alcochol also. A long time ago, enough people saw Pot as a problem and did something about it. Even with all the research NORML did, people still does not want it around. Does that speak of ignorance of the masses? Maybe, but it is extremely rare that the American has not come into contact and seen what it does and how the users act. Everybody has their own experience/exposure with Weed. And overall influence, it's still looked at as a negative. No amount of research from NORML is going to paradigm shift someone's elses personal experience and reality. Overall most don't care enough about it or really don't want it around enough to push any change.

I like spicy chicken sandwich at Carl's JR 99 cents.

The responsible person will not use EITHER in a manner where someone will be hurt.

So, if you smoke a joint one night, to end the day, or week, whatever, call for pizza, have a quiet evening, etc. Do you forego going jumping the next day due to the lasting affects due to the potency of the drug nowadays? Do you forego driving a car for the next couple days for the same reason, slowed reaction times? Do you clear your schedule at work, so you don't forget your appointments, due to increased occurence of short-term-memory loss?

On the other hand, the irresponsible, mental deficient, or incompetent can use either to harm themselves or others.

Agreed.

Even an idiot can choose not to pull a trigger. One cannot choose to get high or get-un-high if they smoke. The choice is to smoke, or not to smoke. The consequences of which are variable to "harmless" to "extremely harmful".

I do not believe it is. And I believe that with government regulation and HARSH punishments for those who cause harm under the influence, there would not be an issue.

The US has some of the harshest punishments for DUI in the "civilized" world, not harsh enough in my opinion, yet it is still the leading cause of automotive deaths.

So does alcohol, nicotine, even caffeine.

What else was going on with these people? Probably much more than MJ.

See above. Just proving my point... Much more than MJ going on there. Remember, you're at an inpatient hospital making these observations.

Well, looks like doctors that can't diagnose beyond MJ usage are setting the bill.

So I take it that you have never witnessed a drug addict so deperate that they would inhale aersol paint fumes if they didn't have something else?

BTW if you haven't seen that I am really glad for you.

And Marijuana had nothing to do with that.

Under that line of reasoning then, should the govt. legalize ALL drugs? Heroin, crack, meth?

Yes. The government shouldn't be telling me what I can and can't do to my own body. Let Darwin do his thing.

That's something I've never seen even once....not personally or in any literature. How do you rule out other causes of psychosis? Often depression causes psychosis. Often people just become psychotic....to be able to pin it down to marijuana use because "all other causes were ruled out"? We don't usually know what the cause is for anyone's psychosis. I just don't buy this argument at all. Sometimes people who develop psychosis are the same people who use drugs....without any causative relationship.

Now to say that there can be permanent change in brain physiology as a result of drug use of any sort....sure.
