HAHA, not trying to be a dick but there is no such thing. Even with just body armor and a basic load, no ruck or additional equipment, pure Hollywood type patrolling with that weapon load you would have your ass handed to you in 1600 meters in the open dessert and in 300 meters in the Mts. of Afghanistan, especially when you're already at 7-9K feet ASL like in the attached pictures. It only takes once to learn these lessons first hand and sometimes people don't get a second chance.Humping it in either of those 2 places is no joke.

QuoteCOL. Iceal Hambleton?
I actually got to sit with him first hand and listen to him tell his story. I have it on cassette tape somewhere in one of the million boxes I have filled with Field Manuals and extra TA-50.

Lou,
I jumped with a guy at Lost Prairie a couple years ago who was Special Forces. He had been all over the middle east including Iraq. He said you wouldn't believe all the stuff his team walked away from over there, but there were also times when he wasn't able to walk away. He said he was tired of getting shot up and ending up in the hospital. He had twenty years in, had a teenage boy at home, and he really wanted to retire. He said he didn't know if they were going to let him out. I wish I could remember his name, you might know him.
I thought it strange that he had a full beard and still in the military, but then I got to thinking that was probably to blend in with the locals over there.

That's good OpSec. Scott - especially the last pic.
Bet your mates are delighted!
'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

There is absolutely nothing in any of those photos, to include the last one, that compromises OPSEC in any way. Do you REALLY think I would post pictures that would?

1600m in the open desert? With just webbing and body armour? Carrying an M-4? Wow. Hardcore.![]()
Even with a 33lb XM-109 it would be a bit hot perhaps, but a piece of piss

Well, over here, if one of the lads stuck a picture of the patrol on a popular website, showing our faces, how popular do you think this action would be?

Kind of like all the other pictures of patrols there are out there right now. You would be hard pressed to ID anyone using that shot as it is.Plus, all my photos have been cleared for public use. This isn't my first day, I know to mind the gap.

I hate to hi-jack this thread by telling war stories...but these are good ones.
There were a ton of pilots being shot down during the latter part of that war. The communists had a huge number of surface to air missles that were very deadly. I talked with one Marine fighter pilot who evaded death more than once by simply making a big turn at the last second, hoping the missle wouldn't follow. Can you imagine how many gees that would put on your body, or how scary that would be! He made close to a 100 combat missions in a phantom jet. He said most Marine pilots also had to fly helicopters for half their tour, but in spent his entire time in a Phantom. Some of this was over North Vietnam where he definitely didn't want to bail out. Some nights he'd look down at all the lights below, and knew there was noone like him down there to help. He said the SAM missles looked just like a telephone pole coming up to get you.
More than once he had a communist mig in his sights, but couldn't shoot unless they showed some form of aggressive action.
One of his best stories involved refueling over the gulf...
One day they had a C-130 full of fuel. They all flew in formation and one by one they would move up and refuel (in flight). They were waiting their turn when a new navy pilot (who hadn't been in country very long) came barreling in out of the clouds. He ran right into the c-130 and it burst into a huge fireball (complete with flying metal) directly in fron of them. At that moment he thought he was dead, but he was able to keep his jet flying. His wing man sucked in a bunch of junk and he had to bail out over the ocean.
They definitely had more guts than I ever will.....Steve1
