Are we closer to the return of the draft?

>Also, the military has more than its fair share of imbeciles.

Right, and they seem to be able to deal with that.

That they have imbeciles, or that they deal with the problems that can arise from differences in age, or that the imbeciles can deal with the problems that can arise from differences in age?

>That they have imbeciles . . .

Yeah. As you said, the military has its fair share of imbeciles, and they seem to deal with that OK. Given that, it seems less of a problem to deal with someone in charge who's younger. (Personally, I'd much rather deal with a leader who was 15 years younger than me than an older guy who was an idiot.)

Now if we could just apply that to the entire military........

As a 40 year-old resident, I "take orders" from more experienced physicians who are younger than me all the time. I appreciate that they share their experience with me. I think the age issue is only a problem if you make it one. The issue of age is different than the issue of competence, and I think it's best not to confuse them.

Now that we've really hijacked this thread......
Congratulations and its not just by chance that you wrote "take orders". Working in a hospital and being in the military are two totally different things.

I'm sure that nothing is really comparable to being in the military.... I was a military brat early on....and I ONCE was the wife of a Navy pilot. Now I'm a doctor. Each of those experiences has its own set of demands.

You'll have to help me, though, with why being in the military makes the age issue so much different than in any other situation. Age is age. Competence is competence. Why would being in the military make it so difficult to answer to a younger person?

The thing about your posts that I like is that they are thoughful and embody such a broad variety of subjects. :P
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Always a pleasure to be of service.:)
Face it, his incompetent planning and execution leading to the current quagmire is the reason we are discussing this topic at all.

Haha, just when I thought this thread was going well.

orders are orders, if you cant follow (or resent due to irrelevant reasons like age) the chain of command, there is a fundamental failure in discipline that needs to be addressed APART from any 'age based' resentment.

the FACTS are the younger generation (of soldiers) is often FAR more qualified on the latest and greatest in equipment, tactics, techniques and procedures than the last.

Age != Experience.

What have the max ages for the respective branches been increased to?

Not sure which branch, I think Army. Just raised it to 42.

I got a letter from the Army trying to recruit physicians yesterday....they said I had to be under 55 join.

:o:o:o...and for blind Dr's the dog has to be under five years old:D:D
