America Welcomes Commie Muslims!

Interesting data, but the fact remains that this statement: "Why is it always the US that takes the "oppressed"
peoples of another country
" is misleading in the extreme.

I suppose, I agree it's inaccurate, but I was answering another question.

Hey Darius your dad bucked then trend mate more refugees go to Iran than the US!

UK

Although at present the UK receives more asylum applications than other Western European countries in terms of absolute numbers, in terms of asylum applications per head of population the UK ranked only 8th in 2002* and 12th over the last decade as a whole (1992 - 2001). [*Excluding Italy as data is not yet available.]

Asylum figures must also be looked at in the context of the wider global and long-term picture. In the 1990s Germany received the highest number of applications within the European Union. Just under two million applied for asylum in Germany between 1990-2000 - in comparison the UK had only 25% of Germany's total (454,445).

UK compared with non-industrialised countries:
The UK hosts far fewer refugees and asylum seekers than many non-industrialised countries. Pakistan (2,199,379), Iran (1,868,011) and Afghanistan (1,226,098) hosted the most refugees in 2001. In relation to their national population Bosnia and Herzegovina, Liberia and Macedonia hosted far more refugees than the UK. Developing countries that lack the wealth and stability that the UK enjoys host far more refugees, in relation to GDP per capita Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo and United Republic of Tanzania hosted far more refugees than the UK.

MAIN HOST COUNTRIES START 2005
Country Rank
Islamic Rep. of Iran 1
Pakistan 2
Germany 3
United States 4
United Rep. of Tanzania 5
China 6
United Kingdom 7
Serbia and Montenegro 8
Chad 9
Uganda 10

Main source countries of asylum applications in industrialised countries: Similarities and differences explained

Similarities in country of origin reflect major sources of conflict at the time; for example in 2001 applications from Iraq and Afghanistan were large in most countries. Figures are reflective of current world situations and thus the numbers of Afghans applying for asylum in 2002 reduced dramatically: During the first quarter of 2002, the number of Afghan asylum-seekers dropped by 33% across Europe as a whole and fell by 18% in the UK over the year as a whole and continued to fall in the first quarter of 2003.

Differences in applicant's county of origin between industrialised countries reflect historical connections between those countries. For example, Algeria and France have a strong connection whereas the UK receives many more asylum applications from Sri Lankans due to its colonial past.

In 2002:

UK asylum applications were received in the main by applicants originating from Iraq, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Somalia and China.
In France applications were mainly from Turkey, D. R. Congo, Mauritania, Algeria and China.
In the United States applications were in the main from China, Mexico, Colombia, Haiti and India.

You also have to take into consideration economic migrants... Since the widening of the EU, large numbers of people make migrated from Eastern Europe westwards. These figures are almost indeterminable due to the legal free movement across EU boundaries.

I saw on the news tonight that in the last two years we've had an influx of 8 MILLION legal migrants from the new EU counties. With Bulgaria and a couple of other joining next year who knows how many more will be coming over. (8 Million is the same as the city of Liverpool!)

That high? Wow.. but it's all perfectly legal but does affect the local economy/services etc.. and not always in the bad way that some people would have us believe (Most people come to work, afterall). But it does change the demographic of an area too and that can also be good... change can be good and add to the diveristy that some of us like to cherish in the U.K.

Note of caution... we DONT want thugs and dickheads like the BNP, jumping on these figures and suggesting that OUR jobs are being handed over etc.... etc.... Because most of us (IT peeps) already know that they been SOLD off-shore:(

What? Liverpool in the UK is at 8 million? :o
How many times did you count, Jamile?? ;)
:)

If you count Manchester, Birmingham and Sheffield as suburbs of Liverpool you might come close.

And a free pass to the plan Marshal aid, after fucking up the world on 2 very distinct occassions...:|

OK. My guess on the two occasions the world was fucked up are:

1. 1918 - Woodrow WIlson lies to Arab Allies after WWI & redraws the mid-east map.

2. 1953 - Ike authorises The Great Gonzo The Bold Kermit to install the Shah and thus sets the client-state precedent which has been followed ever since.

The Marshall Plan didn't really make up for that, did it!!?

No, not really, but it gave many European countries a fresh start. Not considering of course the centuries of occupation and brutalization in the colonies by the same family descendants that still in power.:S

I'm not sure what you're talking about here. WWI ended in 1919, with the Treaty of Versailles (officially). Even his "Fourteen Points" speech doesn't really touch on the middle east. He did help redraw a lot of Europe though.

Where did you learn this ass-backwards vision of history? Following Britain's embargo on Iran (resulting from Iran's take over of the oil industry, run by Anglo-Iranian Oil who became BP), it was the British Intelligence Service that asked President Eisenhower (after President Truman turned them down) for support with Operation Ajax - the coup to overthrow Mossadegh. President Eisenhower agreed and directed the CIA to assist the BIS. The British plan was executed out of the US Embassy in Tehran.
