Some sad poll results

But if you want, make a book of "Important information every American should know." It might even sell a good number of copies, though it won't reach the people you pity so much.

Dude, there were seven pairs of questions in that poll, three of them concerned the highest level workings of your government, one of them concerned the single most important event in recent history and another concerned the US's most important and loyal foreign ally.

Why get so pissy about those questions just because you didn't think mercury and Homer were relevant?

The entire system is broken from top to bottom and I have no clue where to even begin fixing it.

From observing people over the last few years, it seems laziness and mediocrity are the natural progression of man.
Technology of a few has made life easier for the rest, so they just sit down and allow their brains to go into neutral.
Cooking a meal is too much work, so they stuff their faces with fast food, and sit down some more. Pretty soon, they can barely get out of the chair, and still they want technology to help them with their health problems.
After all, learning something is actually work, and that's become a four letter word.

Correct spelling took a hit when while I was in school when the lib educators introduced "whole language".

I have been fighting to get better (at spelling) ever since.:S

Could you clarify which of those questions involved "the single most important event in recent history"?

I seriously hope you're not referring to 9/11.

I deleted the following sentence where I wrote 'in terms of shaping US foreign policy'. I probably should have left it in.

You think that 9/11, which has sparked two wars, could not possibly be considered one of the most important RECENT events that has impacted the world?

Important != good

Though significant might have been a better choice.
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

I don't see 9/11 as being "the single most important event in recent history." (emphasis mine) One of the most important recent events? Sure. Single most important event? No.

30% of people polled in a recent Washington Post poll could not name the year that 9/11 occurred. 5% could not name the month it occurred.

In a recent Zogby poll:

75% of americans can identify two of Snow White's dwarves. 25% could identify two Supreme Court justices.

57% knew who Harry Potter was. 50% knew who Tony Blair was.

60% knew Homer Simpson is Bart Simpson's father. 20% knew the greek writer Homer wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey.

60% know Superman is from Krypton. 37% know that Mercury is the closest real planet to our sun.

74% could name Larry, Curley and Moe as the three stooges. 42% could identify our three branches of government.

23% knew who the most recent American Idol winner was. 11% knew who the most recent Supreme Court appointee was.

This is a prime example of why we need to stop polling our politicians.

Dude, I had to actually look that up to see if she really was a winner.

OK, Carrie Underwood was, like, two seasons ago.:S

Furthermore, you really should brush up on your celebs with all their political influence and, like, running for offices and stuff.

Hmmm, D- for general knowledge.

I have knowledge of PLENTY of useless pop culture. American Idol just holds zero intrigue for me.

Sorry, I was educated by liberal educators too. I can spell, and when I'm unsure I generally care enough about my audience to check.

Personally, I think spelling is as much a talent as a learned thing; it's much harder for some people than for others. But tools make that less of a problem, because then it just takes a little longer to spell.
