Isaac Newton famously remarked in a letter to Robert Hooke, dated 5 February 1676:

"If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."

In order to stand on the shoulders of giants, it is important to recognize the difference between giants and pygmies. Our civilization has not been created by cultural illiterates.

the masses of Newton's time were far more ignorant than that of modern time.

Mass was force/acceleration even in Newton's time.:P

The peasants in Newton's time had no access to education. That is not true in our society. The ignorant in our society have no excuses.

Somehow this makes me feel good. I would not know a contestant, or for that matter the host of American Idol if they bit me in the ass.

There was a Clay and a Ruben, and I think one of them won it, but I'm not sure what year that was. The judges are Paula Abdul (an ex-singer/dancer), Simon (frequently maligned for being brutally honest), and Randy (some black guy). That's the extent of my American Idol knowledge.

yet civilization progressed, so it makes your point false. Instead we're back to petty elitism (from a prof - what a shock).

once again someone comes up with a list of half irrelevent facts and is disappointed that they're not known.

Of course more people know Homer Simpson than the Latin classics by Homer. There are 10-20 episodes a week of the simpsons on TV- my tivo records a half dozen of them. FWIW the Simpsons did the Odyssey once.

There are a huge number of books to choose from in literature. My recollection of Honors English from the 80s was there it was heavily slanted towards English writers, with the one year of American lit. (It's far more important that kids read Huck Finn than the Iliad, imo)

Mercury? Relevence? Same for Tony Blair - has the US ever followed England's lead?

As for 5% not knowing the 9th month is September- I hope they were confused by the question, or scribbled outside the bubble.

That's the point, more people watch TV than read.

Why are you busy making rationalizations for stupid people? Why is your conclusion that this is no big deal? Sure, the earth won't tilit of its axis if people know more of the Little Caesars than the Julius Caesar, but it is a barometer of the country's mind.

I know plenty of people holding advanced degrees who voted for GWB. They wonder who in their right mind would have voted for either Gore or Kerry.

The rich paid most of the taxes prior to GWB's tax cut. They still pay most of the taxes today.

:S

Given the increase in class disparity, you explain it well ;)

Civilization wasn't advanced much by uneducated peasants.

If education counts so little (in your eyes) I wonder why parents are spending $120,000 + to send their kids to college these days.

Same reason we do a lot of things. We have been sold a bill of goods that a 4 year college education is needed to get ahead. Fortunatley that is now starting to change in some areas/fields

Now that depends on the field you want to get into in some cases.

I guess what I find so interesting is the arogance of some of those that think they are better and better off with a degree.

Having graduated college just under 4 years ago, I can tell you it was a requirement for my first job which paid me more in my first year than most people in the industry for 20 years.

When I left that position and job-searched for another, I can tell you the degree in my back pocket served me very well for the better-paying jobs.

My friends near and around my same age (26) would concur. Of course, we are just a small sample of the population, but I think we're pretty representative.

I might agree if you specified what type of degree. I think there are only a limited # of professions that benefit from having a masters or further degree than a 4-year.
Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

Ahhhh, my plan is working well...

:D:P

I am not sure what this plan is. It is not like you are convincing me of anything.

Or was it for me to lose my ability to capitalize? Because that ability has returned and that is a really lame plan.:ph34r:
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

True. Given the current degree of outsourcing, there are fine careers available in the food services and hospitality sectors for those who don't want useless degrees.

I'm better off with a degree.

Before I got a degree: job cleaning bathrooms in a county park
After I got a degree: job designing things for a defense contractor.

Does that make me arrogant? Maybe. But I'd rather be called arrogant while designing radar systems than be called one of the good ol' boys while picking used tampons out of the garbage.

I don't think it was the degree that made you arrogant.

:P

In general, I think that most people are better off financially and career-wise with a degree than without one. But of course there are exceptions...

I won't get into the "better person" thing though; that's too subjective, and I don't tend to think in terms of one person being "better" than another.

Nice bill. BS but nice.

I don't have a degree and I am doing quite well thank you and I do not believe I am the exception.

By the way, very misleading nutty examples if you ask me

Once again.

Show me your statistics that, ON THE WHOLE, the average citizen is not going to make more money with a degree.

I don't care what you "think" (read: what you feel to be true). Just because it is true for you and people you know, it is certainly not indicative of how it is for everyone.

you must have had an odd slant on either:

1 - the definition of what "good ol' boys" do for fun or;
2 - the job description for janitor

and I am doing quite well

Would you be doing better with a degree? Will you be doing better with a degree in 10 years?

I'm not saying having one is required to have a happy life and a job you like, but, all things being equal, having a degree gives you more options and on a whole more money. That hepls most people being happier.

That being said, the guys flipping burgers at McD dont have to worry about their fucking pipeline meetings!
