Not really understanding why the British Capt. (who was apparently in charge) even allowed them to be there?

And who the fuck where they exactly...besides two dumb asses?

I read the American "visitors" as an assessment team sent out from HQ. Possibly in response to the Captain demanding more assets to defend this installation.

Having "done it" 35 years or so ago, the two overage, overweight, & over-here ones evidently decided to take the chance to show the youngsters they could still "DOooo... It!"

And as for the difference between a "hunting" & a "Sniper" rifle... Isn't it the size (output-pupil) of the scope? Hunting rifles tend to have scopes fitted that are light, but have poor performance in low light, while a military sniper rifle scope of the same power will be far larger to give better low light performance. For example, to double the output pupil of a scope entails more than quadrupling the weight, and a price hike far greater than a factor of 4

I was actually there and the report is played down some what. In my 18 years in the Army I've worked with forces from countries all around the world and as everywhere you get good and bad, i'm not saying these men were bad just non realistic. They were 2 desk jockies and they had come down to see what was happening in and around the dam complex. They turned up as any tourist would armed with a camera, but what made them differnt was the fact they wer also armed with a deer hunting rifle. One of the guys was a Master Sergeant who had 5 days left in Afghanistan and 2 weeks left in the services, and fair play, he knew his stuff. The other guy was a clerk and he openly admitted that he'd come down because it was (his own words) "Teliban hunting season". The guys seemed to forget all about opsec and the rules of engagement as they spent about 8 hours sat on the perimeter wall waiting for the one shot to tell all their family and freinds about. Thankfully it never came. As i said they weren't bad men, just your typical wannabes you get in every Army (including ours) around the world.
