Hybrid Plug-In Cars

Recommended Posts

While people could get 100 miles to a gallon via plug in hybrid cars, where are they planning to get the extra electricity from?

My only problem with single-source alternative cars is that when you're out of juice on a long trip, you're done travelling for several hours, versus 20 minutes at a gas station. :S

Other than that, the Tesla Motors concept is sweet.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Actually, with both lithium-ions and lead-acids, you can get more than 50% back in under half an hour. It's limited primarily by how much power the station has available.

There have been some very nasty explosions of lithium cells during fast charge, or excessive discharge conditions, if the cell parameters are exceeded.

Yep. Of course, there have been far more very nasty explosions of car fuel tanks when their temperature parameters are exceeded.

or when charges are placed so they blow up like in the movies.:|

Gas tanks blowing up is a very rare occurrance.

My source on this matter is my own uncle who was a fireman for 30 years.

They reponded to many accidents, and even a few shootouts where the tank had holes, was leaking, and still no fire.

Of course, there are far more cars on the road with gas tanks than with lithium batteries. Even an exploding cell phone battery is very nasty and that just contains a few grams of Li compounds.

Attached picture was, I believe, a 2.2Ah Li cell that was overcharged.

but but in the movies cars ALWAYS explode into flames whenever anything (bullet, anothe car) hits the gas tank area!

And planes always go into a nosedive screaming like a Stuka if the engine quits.

That's only because their pilots aren't strong enough to pull back on the yoke and stop the dive.

Yes, I'd better work out some more before practising engine-out landings in the Mooney.

Just dive to get up a good head of steam, level off into ground effect and it'll never land:D

Clearly someone who's logged Mooney time:)

Dell's recall of lithium-ion batteries is expected to cost $400M. The most costly recall ever in the consumer electronics business.
