akarunway 1 #1 July 15, 2006 So. I grossed approx. 80k last yr. for 8 mths work and unemployment for 4 mths. I don't have a fucking dime. I don't do drugs. I do have a couple old trucks and a couple computers and a new skydiving rig I bought. How the fuck does someone making 10 $ an hr. or less survive? SAD Edit to add : 50k to insurance and union dues in the last 4 yrs. Never used a fuckin penny of insurance and it's cancelled because I HAVEN'T worked in a few months. And the union sent/gave our Pres. and the Sect./Treasuer last yr.(I hold it true, whate'er befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all. AggieDave 6 #2 July 15, 2006 You can't even fathom how many people I've come into contact with that are unemployed but they're living in a similarly sized duplex as my own. They have a 50" flat screen TV, surround sound system, a HUGE collection of DVDs and PS2 games. Nevermind the Lincoln 4-door. The basic difference is that they're using HUD for their housing and Lonestar for their food and don't have a job, and I work my ass off to barely get by.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." I see these illegals (gut feeling, no proof) driving brand new Hummers around here all the time. So. Cal. rmsmith 1 #4 July 15, 2006 You're making above average wages. I earn slightly less than you, and I'm supporting two kids and a stay at home mom. I've been buying dental crowns, a newer Camry for the wife, junk on wheels for me, buying a new house (40% paid off), plenty of savings, 401k plan, and no loans or credit card debt! Oh yeah, I also have two new rigs too. Of course I'm living in rural America to pull this off. You must be living large; enjoy!
CanuckInUSA 0 #5 July 15, 2006 It's not how much you make that counts, it's how much you spend versus how much you take home after taxes. Being involved in an expensive sport such as skydiving doesn't help that's for sure. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
downwardspiral 0 #6 July 15, 2006 its called money management. If I were making 80K per year I could put 30K-40K in the bank every year and still be living comfortably. Of course I am single with no children and I intend to stay childless and live happy. www.FourWheelerHB.com

Even in CA, that's above average income, for below average hours (unless you were doing 60+ hour weeks for those 8 months). Other than self-employed, I've never had a real job that paid for overtime even as straight time (I'm not counting pumping gas or working at McDonalds here), much less as time and a half. Good point you make about the $10 per hour around here. I don't see how those folks make it, even with 4 earners in a small household.

I haven't worked in some months now due to cronyism and nepotism and my BA's and BM's sitting on their collective fat asses losing all our jobs to non-union co.'s. I've only been in the union 4 ys (after working non-union all my life) so I know both sides of the coin. Non union is actually paying better these days due to incentives such as tax free per diem and housing and such. Time to take another look at my situation I guess. nanook 1 #11 July 16, 2006 Well, think if it this way. You have the upper hand because the future will tell the reality of a lifestyle. I'm making a big assumption on your character, but I would bet in ten years time, you will have been promoted to a higher position and making a lot more money. The 50" flatscreen having,Lincoln 4-door having welfare types will have a ten year old 50" flatscreen and by now are paying off their long since broken Lincoln or have another vehicle loan that came from them trading a highly upside-down valued loan from the lincoln._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln
